Rappahannock Ridge

Take 95 south or north to exit 130 to Culpeper (west). Stay in right lane and make right into Central Park Blvd. Make a right on Fall Hill Avenue. Go about a mile and cross over I-95 then down a windy hill and just at the bottom across a small canal bridge to the right is a gravel lot (Park there). To the left is a gated gravel drive way which is part of Virginia Outdoor Center (Don’t park there). Hop on your bike and cross Fall Hill to the gated drive on the left. Trail head is way down the gated gravel drive about half a mile then go another half mile down the jogging path to an open gavel parking lot and road. Make a right up the gravel road a few meters and trail head is on the right. Stay in granny gear for a very steep ramp climb. Trails consist of 7-8 miles of single-track. Trail is very technical at the beginning until you reach a drainage tunnel taking you under I-95. Trail opens up to a fire road after the tunnel. Stay to the right and becomes single track at the billboard signs. Then veer left into the woods for some moderate down hills and moderate climbs. Stay left throughout the rest of the trail. It dumps you back out at the gravel lot you came in at from the jogging path.

Summary:
This really is a challenging trail... a great workout for sure, with enough terrain challenges to test your skills as well. Plus, it's down by the river, so it's pretty scenic...

Compared to Hollywood Farm, it's more technical, and more difficult aerobically.

And, on top of it, you're only a mile or so from Carl's for some post-race carb-replenishment.
2200 Princess Anne St... enjoy!

Recommended Route:
If you can ride it for the first time right after a race (www.fredevents.org), then there will be a fair number of signs giving you the optimum route.

If not, ride the fire road in and just before you hit the quarry lake, take a left up the hill... when in doubt, stay high until you're ready to go back down to the River and ultimately back to parking.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Richmond, Brown's Island: Love it
Ashland, Poor Farm: Like it
F-Burg, Hollysood/Lodi: Like it
F-Burg, Ferry Farm: o.k.

Summary:
given the location this trail is a 5. i never get tired of it as there are a good number of technical climbs to work on. in particular the climbs up on either side of the quarry are a ton of fun and give a good sense of accomplishment when completed. there is pretty regular trail building and maintenance going on back there so you're likely to find something new every other month or so

Recommended Route:
climb the first hill ("1") after you pass the quarry (trail has a left turn you can can take). from there ride the ridge until it drops you back down close to the river. climb right back up for some more fun at stay along towards the top of the ridge. it will eventually drop you back down and loop back to take you on the path that goes back to the quarry
