Basicly this is really a freeride place.
XC: there are a few xc trails but just long enough to have a good sprint, not very long.
FR: by the first parking lot there is a big field, and pavillion, and if you look down the field you will see this huge fort, and to the left of it there is a little one. The big fort has a HUGE natural half pipe (sort of) that is great for big air jumps, also a gap to the hill and stairs.
The second fort is more my favorite, Has jumps and stairs but to see them you have to be creative!!! Great for BIG trick
Off the GW parkway. From old town just travel the parkway and youll see teh turn on your right, from The mt vernon estate, just travel down the park way and there will be another turn off on your right.
The signs are pretty easy to read!
Summary: I used to walk my dog here all the time. The forts mentioned in the description are historic military installations from the late 19th century. I guess the stairs leading down to the big one could be interesting to ride once or twice... not really worth the trip, though.
Anyway, if you go around to the rear of the park, past the police horse stable, you can park near the rest area facility. To the right of that is a maintenance road leading into the woods. Take that road about 1/4-1/3 mi., and on the right there will be a trailhead. This is where I used to walk my dog. It might be fun on a mountain bike... never tried it, since other, better trails are relatively close by. Plus I have no idea if this trail is legal to ride, and I caution anyone trying to do so that there will likely be people and dogs on the trail. It also won't be much of a ride, since it's a relatively short trail (less than a mile) that curves back around to the park road.
Recommended Route: Not necessarily "recommending" you try it, but the trail is located off the maintenance road in the back of the park. The maintenance road is to the right of the bathroom building, and the trail is about 1/4-1/3 mi. in on the right.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Wakefield, Fountainhead
