Wintergreen Resort Mountain Bike Park

An eloborate network of single track trails throught a forested landscape. Many small tight loops of varying difficulty. The trails lie between two ski slopes on a ridge. Ski trail access roads are also available. The park is the trail head for "Loggers Alley". Cannondale rentals available. Call for more information. 804-325-8166 or 800-266-2444 ext 8166.
West from Charlottesville or Richmond. I-64 to the Crozet exit, left on Rt 250 aprox 6 miles, left on Rt 151 aprox 15 miles, right on Rt 664 to Wintergreen Resort Gate House. Get map and directions at Gate House to the OWLS Mt.Bike Center located on Devils Knob.
Summary: Wintergreen is a cool spot to just kick back and ride some "SHORE" type trails. I've ridden the real NorthShore in BC and these guys who have built this stuff in WinterGreen> Brad,Bansh and others are on the right track! The runs are short but are packed with good value so dont listen to that peckerwood "WakeUp's" post below because he's just pissed off becaues he is too much of a wuss to ride any of it! Im not the worlds biggest fan of Ski resort type riding but its worth the trip there because the trails are well thought out and are technical enough to bite you on the ass if you dont stay focused.
Recommended Route: Get a map or call the resort!

Summary: Steep, steep, steep. If you thought u know 'technical', you will be surprised. Steep, rocky, rooty, off camber, switch backs, NS stunts(ladders/bridges/drops). Amzing riding, awsome friendly atmosphere. New trails and stunts getting built all the time.
Recommended Route: Berm trail- head right off lift, cut into woods...huge steep tight berms, followed by steep rocky rooty sections, and couple of drops.

Summary: well I don't use this site often, but let me start off by saying that Wintergreen kicks ass. If you are into butt draggin steep dark loamy, rocky, rooty soil; this place is for you. If you enjoy techincal drops, ladders, and other north shore style riding you will love this place. If you are looking to improve your technical riding skills come out and ride your bicycle. This place has made a vast improvement since the beginning of last summer. check out va. forums on www.ridemonkey.com for pics of what's up now.
Recommended Route: Start with Tyro a high speed shot down the slope duck left into the woods over a rock, fly hit the stump jump, roll the rock face, keep on going either hang a left on to "two tree chute" or continue straight on tyro and hit a rock drop.
I can't believe it's Wintergreen is another real fun trail. After you are good and warmed up check out Mecca. Other trails to check out are Banche, Berm Trail.
Other recommended trails in the same area: None that are up to this level of riding.

Ridden Trail: Please Select

Summary: Well.... WAKE UP makes a good point - posers are not gonna like this place very much, neither is anyone expecting a full-on DH experience. I've got to give credit to the guys who have built the trails. What's there is technical & way fun, and makes the most of a really limited elevation drop. Unfortunately, it's a really short ride to the bottom because you're only dropping something like 700'(like 5-10 minutes down, then back on the lift). I rode Downieville, CA (15 MILES DOWN) the weekend before, so I was pretty suprised at how small the mountain was, and was riding a borrowed bike that was actively for sale, so I took it easy in the tech sections. The "shuttle served 7 mile downhill" is indeed a joke, UNLESS you just blast down it & don't touch the brakes. 45mph on a freeride bike on loose rocks is exciting no matter what. If you ride it like a trail and not a DH run, it's gonna suck. It's wide and mostly smooth. Still fun at Mach 5. The rating? 5 Stars for the stunts & the techicals, 2 for Wintergreen's overbilling of the "7 miler".

Summary: OK, perhaps its my fault for not checking this site before riding, but I read about the trail in another source. Most of the trail (expert)is designed for the "free rider" - big drops requiring body armor and many inches of travel. The intermediate single track sections are just poor waste of hillside real estate and others are just roads running down the ski runs. As far as Logger's Alley, it a joke also. I was told by one of the employees of the resort that it was single track with a short section of road before the pick up point and that it takes over an hour to ride. Flat out lies - it is an old logging road, one long section of gravel road, two pieces of black top (including the last 1.5 miles), and took under 25 minutes to ride. I inquired about a refund, but no manager was on duty on the weekend. Guess he knows which days to take off.
Recommended Route: Don't remember, I was just driving through.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Big Levels was good - technical in some areas and great climb. Walnut Creek Park was an enjoyable end to the day.
