The Shenandoah Mountain 100
9 reviews
 4.89 of 5

On October 2nd, 1999, a dream created by Chris Scott, Mike Carpenter, Thomas Jenkins and a whole host of Harrisonburg quacks came to fruition when 100 riders set out at 7am to ride their bikes 100 miles up and over Shenandoah Mountain. Up and over it five times, that is. Fascinating as it may be, it turned out for many to be the most amazing and the most brutal ride they had ever done. By five that afternoon, the first quarter of the race field had finished, while up on Little Bald Knob, many racers were so bonked that they were seen sleeping on the trail (one of them so bold as to actually sleep the entire night up there). In the end it was definitely a success. So sign up for future runnings and experience Virginia riding in it's most glorious form.

Once a year

Summary:
Once a year is enuff! Planning to return for my third assault on this world-class course and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this amazing event. These guys put on a 1st class race/party. Top pros like Eatough, Haywood, Landis, Harmon and Bishop battle it out off the front while the rest of the field just try to survive to the finish line where they drop their rigs on the grass and stagger in to the beer tent.

Thought I'd never come back after surviving that brutal first year - but the draw was too strong. The second try really is worth it - you can't believe how much better you'll feel - and how much more fun you have!
Better register early though - field fills fast.

Recommended Route:
All of it!

Summary:
I rode this year for my first ever race as a goal to motivate my training. The ride was unreal. I was demoralised by the climbs then delighted by the downhills which were fairly fast and not too technical. Need to train much harder for next year. My HRM said I burned nearly 11000 Kcal! At least I didn't come in last. Hope I don't need my light next year. Just Do It!

Recommended Route:
I wish I could remember. Maybe I will figure it out at the Shenandoah MTB Fest tomorrow.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I ride Elizabeth Furnace often and Duncan Hollow/Camp Roosevelt area occasionally. Also hit alot of road bike miles on Skyline Drive. Sherando and Douthat are great too.

Summary:
If you can pedal for 8-12 hours without stopping, you'll be fine in this ride.
It remains one of the highlights of my year, regardless of how well I do.
The best aspect of the race is how it reincarnates some of the old school aura of mtb racing, with wacky equipment configurations, tail pipe cafes, laid back riders - emphasis seems to be on partying and having fun, rather than competition.

Also see about the wilderness 101 in state college, PA. Same deal, more
technical. Just as fun, a bit harder on the bones.

and it really is worth working that second job just to pay for registration.
no worries.

Recommended Route:
just keep pedaling

Summary:
Up down and around for 100 miles of fun. Best event I have ever done and I have done a few! Hats off to Chris and his unbelievable support team. The MORE folks put on quite a show with the meals. I did the 2002 event and will do it every year as long as I am drawing breath. As for the course itself, Hankey Mtn almost made me cry but Dowells Draft more than made up for it. Braleys Pond was a great singletrack climb - and oh boy that descent! DD and BP are two of the best singletrack DH's I have ever been on. Great event, great course. Do yourself a favor and start training now. The 2003 event is 3 months away. One last thing, i rode it w/ an altilmeter and got 12,250 feet of climbing.

Recommended Route:
The wheel in front of you - follow it.

Amazingly, the IMBA Epic route was not one inch on the SM 100 route. I think it was on Shenandoah Mtn Trail and Jerkemtight

Summary:
The race is top notch. It is run very well and is the best race course I have ever been on. All I can say is train hard and ride it.

Recommended Route:
After each downhill I yelled to every one around me that was the best down hill I have ever done.
