Sherando Lake (trail system)
22 reviews

The terrain varies in this trail system from small rocks to large rocks to even larger rocks. There is a small sand pit on Mills Creek trail. It also has some good launches for the way back down trip. Stony Run Trail has some dirt at the top. Kennedy Ridge Trail can be like biking on bowling balls. You are in for a work out in this trail system. It is only an hour and a half from Richmond. DO NOT ATTEMPT WITHOUT A MAP AND PLENTY OF FOOD/WATER/TOOLS.

Summary:
WOW! We started at the dirt lot that winds up the creek to switchbacks (this climb is a MOFO), took the left on the jeep road at the top of that, then Torre Ridge (good god there are rocks, big rocks, boulders, and bigger boulders!!!) then some screaming downhills that eventually led down into the park around the lake, then a little road ride back to the dirt lot. Man this was a very fun ride! It was also very hard (climbing and the rocks/boulders). Overall a fantastic ride that whpped my GA A$$ good! I would definitely recommend going with someone who knows the place. I will also say big volume tubeless tires are a good idea.

Recommended Route:
The above described route is the only one I've done although I know there's lot's more out there!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Walnut Creek

Summary:
I rode it today (Feb 3, 2007) and it was miserably cold (with the wind it felt about 15 degrees). Regardless of the weather though it is a great ride and quite a workout (bring lots of water). This trail is very rocky and technical so be careful. The downhill (Tory, Slacks, and White Rock) is a lot of fun and fast.

Recommended Route:
Start at Coal Road (FR42) parking area (dirt lot)... take Mills Creek to switchbacks... up switchbacks... go left on the fireroad (FR162) - it was snow and ice today - left on Torry... right to Slacks trail... left to White Rock Gap Trail... to the lake... to road... right on Coal Road back to parking area

Summary:
I'm tired of hearing about the switchbacks! Be a man and take Coal Rd to the end and climb the jeep trail up to the top. Dont bail on the parkway either once up there at the fork. Stay left and take a left at the small brown walking sign then follow the yellow and blue down to the park. A real beater.

Summary:
great trial system. i love the scenic views from the parkway. highly reccomend it. don`t forget to stop by peformance bike in c-ville while your there. (i`ve bought 4 bikes from them) sswitchbacks are impossible, don`t die!!

Recommended Route:
from coal road its definitely a day long trip with plenty of great places to stop along the way. take your time going up because the downhill is unbeleivable. from the sherando parking lot up to whit rock gap parking area & then up to bald mtn. overlook is the easiest ascent with a treacherous dowhill to coal road. sometimes i just go up until i`m tied and turn around for the downhill run. (usually at the switchbacks)also stop for chili dogs & mtn. dew at the little convenience store just down from coal rd. on the way back to sherando. last time we had a large group, stayed in the area for 3 days drove two trucks and ran our own shuttle for 3 days extreme downhills.
