Pumping Station to Great Falls
5 reviews
 3 of 5

This trail starts in Reston area and runs all the way into GF park. The first half involves alot of singletrack, fire roads, and various other trails that are sometimes very technical, especially when they are muddy, which is pretty often. There are also 4 stream crossings, so expect to get wet, because you will. be careful of quicksand-like muck at crossings or you may lose a shoe. (i've seen it done many times). This part is pretty flat with a few small hills. Eventually you'll end up at Difficult Run parking lot (the 4th stream crossing). From there you can head into GF park on the Difficult run trails. They are not all that technical but there are a few fairly steep uphills that are quite slippery and rocky at times. the last mile is a fire road down into the park where you can really haul ass with no brakes (sucks on the way back up). Overall, this has a bit of everything, but is much more fun after a heavy rain when deep mud and deep streams present some challenges. Rookies might not want to get their new Cannondales muddy, though....I forgot. If you want to make it even longer, start at the Reston Ice Rink and you have quite a workout ahead of you. Watch out for beginners who are short on skills and courtesy, and frequent hikers and occasional horses, though.....

Summary:
Difficult run to Great falls is a fun run. there are lots of creeks to cross, it gets muddy and doesnt dry up unless we have a bad drought. The tree cover keeps things moist. This is for riders of all abilities. There are alot of trails in Great falls park too.

Recommended Route:
'The pumping station' is just off route 7.
That is Difficult run. The trail in Reston is NOT DIFFICULT RUN. It leads to it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
wakefield, fountainhead, accotink.

Ridden Trail:
Once a week

Summary:
I ride this trail a couple times a week. It's pretty fun, but most of all it's convenient for me. There are alot of heart pounding climbs throughout the trails especially when it's wet. There can be some fun little jumps throughout the trail, but watch out for the trees, the trail is very windy so before you decide to go it all on those jumps look ahead. Some of the climbs can be very technical and almost impossible if you loose momentum, so keep trucking. Overall this is one of my favorite trails. It has a little of everything from tough climbs to fast decents with some nice little jumps just to mix it up a bit.

Recommended Route:
This trail is not too difficult to get to. I live about 2 miles away. If you have a computer look up Reston Ice skating rink(if you want to start there) or Fairfax Park (if you want out miss out on some of the good stuff). If you can't get direction on the computer, here they are. From Route 7 take a right onto the Reston Parkway heading south. Follow that for a few mile until you see the reston town center area and take a left on Sunset Hills follow that for about a mile or so and take a left on Micheal Faraday Ct. At the end of the Court take a right( you will see the ice skating rink on your right and the parking lot directly accross the street. The trail head is in the back left of the parking lot. If your your coming south of the Dulles Toll Rd on the Reston Parkway, you'll take a Right onto Sunset Hills(it should be the 1st or 2nd right after you pass over the toll rd. If you are planning on starting at Lake Fairfax Park....your on your own.

Fairfax Park is very diverse and allows many different trails to wonder around in.
One good entry point is the skating rink in the rear

Try the "Route 7 to Reston" trail directions.
