Summary: Not too technical, but it's fast and reasonably fun, and I can ride there from my garage. Going all the way to Great Falls and beyond can be a boring between Colvin Run and Great Falls, and if you don't know where you're going, you can feel like you're getting lost. Make it to Great Falls, and you can refill water there. If you don't cross Rte7, the trail continues, and takes some fun single track to loop back around to the W&OD. Take a right on the W&OD to get back to Michael Faraday. On the W&OD back you can take a left after you cross the road at the top of the first hill, and it will take you on single track to Lake Audobon. That can be fun too, but it's all roads back to Michael Faraday from there.
Recommended Route: Start at Michael Faraday, ride to Colvin Run, Cross Rte 7 and continue all the way to Great Falls / Difficult Run / and beyond. 30 miles out and back. OR Ride to Colvin Run, continue the loop and finish East of Hunter Mill Road on the W&OD. Ride the W&OD back to Michael Faraday. ~8 miles.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Wakefield is the best bang for you buck within 5 minutes of the beltway. If you want to really ride, go ride Gambrills State Park and Frederick Watershed in Frederick MD. I would say that's some of the best riding on the East Coast, and you can ride 60 miles out there if you aren't afraid (or are willing) to get lost.

Summary: This trail is FAST, especially when there hasn't been any rain in a whil, but can get muddy as Collin said. It really shouldn't be ridden for about 48 hours after measurable rain. Again, not much technical, but a lot of fun. Great training grounds for newer and intermediate riders, and great fast after work rides. But beware that this place really won't get your lungs burning, so if you ride this place well, don't expect to be able to ride places like E. Furnace, Fountainhead or Gambrill without coughing up a lung. You can ride it in a loop to the W&OD trail, a couple of miles east of where you parked at Michael Faraday, or you can turn around and ride the trail back. A lot of sections are more fun on the way back, especially the section between the W&OD and the Toll Rd underpass. Ride times for the out and back to the W&OD are anywhere between 1:10 (moving very fast and not stopping at all) and 2:00, depending on......
Recommended Route: When you come up to Rt7, go straight across the neighborhood street. Don't cross Rt7. The really twisty narrow stuff is fun, and the other side of Rt7, which takes you North to Georgetown Pike and eventually Great Falls Park, is REALLY muddy, and never dries out. It's the kind of black mud that grabs tires and won't let go.

Summary: Great trail. The downhills are fun. The creek crossings are great. The jumps are a blast. Kennedy: GLad you enjoyed it. Keep at it. From a technical view point, this trail isnt very difficult. Mastering this trail will ensure better odds you will survive most others. I say survive because there is some scary stuff out there. Big groups ride on wednesday eve 5/5:30pm
Recommended Route: See above
Other recommended trails in the same area: wakefield, accotink, fountainhead.

Summary: I had a lot of fun. The guy who said beginners should watch out for downhills is right. I'm a beginner, and I nearly died on some of those drops. Luckily, I never fell. I did get thrown from my bike when it got muddy and my tires stuck. The downhills are so much fun though and going up them is a good workout. Make sure to ride this trail if you are nearby it.
