Iron Mountain trail

climbing and kinda technical and hilly. Nice trail
Summary: This is by far my favorite trail. It has countless trails off of it that have incredible climbs and descents, but the Iron Mountain takes the cake. A lot of rocks, but that is what full suspension is for. There are drops here and there and log jumps are beginning to appear on to the sides of the trail. If it has rained in the last few days, prepare to get muddy. Also watch out for the occasional horse, hiker, or dirt biker. Everyone is real nice on the trail, but sometimes those blind corners get scary.
Recommended Route: I usually start at the bottom of FR 90 where it intersects 58. Climb for about a 1 1/2 mile and then descent to a sharp right hander. There take the furthest right of the trails/fire roads. At the top of the short climb, head into the woods on the single track (there is a trail sign). Stay on the Iron Mountain until you reach Beach Grove Trail (on left about 4 miles in). Descend 1 mile on Beach Grove. Turn left on 58 and climb 3 miles back to FR 90. The parking lot at the end of Beach Grove is a good spot to start to as it gets the climb out of the way while the legs are fresh.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Virginia Creeper Trail: Access points at Beach Grove parking lot, Damascus, Whitetop Mountain, Taylor's Valley, and Abingdon. Good ride for family or inexperienced riders.
Mock Holler: Starts in Damascus up road across from Cowboy's gas station. Intersects Iron Mountain at top and then hits Beach Grove on right. Good loop if tied in with Creeper.
Bear Tree: Only rode twice. Plan to go back soon. Was really nasty in the fall with all of the leaves down.

Summary: Great for those that like to be on top of the world. Very technical, rocky, short steep climbs, overall a ridge ride. Many options for ride routes. You can make tis an epic trail or a short hour ride depending on what route is taken.
Recommended Route: My first time being there we got a recommended route from Adventure Damascus. Getting a shuttle to drop you off at the bottom of one of the many fireroads is a great option and then take the IMT back to town. My friend and I took FR 90 at US 58 and climbed 1.5 miles to the top and intersected the IMT. We then took the ridgeline towards Shaw Gap. After the intersection of Shaw gap we continued on an out-and-back on the IMT. We turned around after 3 miles and returned back to Shaw Gap. We then took a right down the Chestnut Ridge Trail. Great downhill with big drops that can be hidden under leaves. We then took a left onto FR615 and proceeded to climb back up to the intersection of IMT. We then took the Feathercamp trail back down to US58. The bottom of Feathercamp had 6 creek crossing that had to be walked so be prepared to get your feet wet if your not careful. Once on US58 ride back to town and catch the Creeper trail to ride back into town.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Lum Trail, Beartree Rec area, creeper trail, plus more rides off of the IMT. A gold mine of trails and places to see just bring food and a sense of adventure.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: Quite a nice mix of singletrack, fire road and forest service gravel. Word of warning.. Think reliability. raceday components have NO place out here.Access the IMT from any of the previously mentioned places and ride East.At Skulls Gap you will intersect FR84.Take 84 East and you will come to Old 84 about 6 miles up from Hurricane Creek Campground. Pass straight over the Tank Trap and into Jerrys Creek and Rowlands Creek Falls Trail. A killer downhill ensues. Take the time about two miles into to enjoy the falls. (Killer). At the bottom of this plunge you will come to a road, the loop goes to the left cross the creek and go left again. Begin climbing Jerrys Creek Trail Cimb baby climb to the top of a nondescript forest service road. This is Old 84. Turn left and you will descend on this roller of a jeep trail only without the jeeps for 5 to 6 miles before arriving back at your start. turn RIGHT onto 84 and pick up the IMT shortly thereafter. If done right you will have had 60 miles into this ride from Beartree.
Recommended Route: As i stated earlier but this time you can include the Rowlands Creek Trail off of Old 84. This is a killer downhill loop with an equally killer climb back up to Old 84 to 828 or 84 to the IMT. Stop at the Ranger station for a map --Highly reccomendo EPIC!!

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: The mock hollar is a very steep and technical climb, especially after a rain because the water washes the rocks out.The clim is about 2.5 miles give or take a few,but it can be done.I ride this trail a;ot and it usually kicks my butt every time, but once in a while i can clean the climb.Once you get to the top of the mock hollar you have a sweet little downhill to the iron mountain trail, there you have so many different choices. When I ride by myself I turn right at the motor cycle trail as some of the locals call it,but I think it is called the beech groove trail to be correct. This trail is a great technical downhill that will let you go as fast aas you have the nerve to go. This loop is about 10 to 11 miles long and you end up in damascus on the creepere trail. If you want to go epic you can stay on the iron mountain trail and lots of different loops with a wide range of beauty and evil.
Recommended Route: I leave from mtn.city,tenn.to damascus. From there I usually stop in the bike shop called Adeventure Damascus. The guys at the shop are great and they ride the trails so the know what they are talking about. After i leave the shop I go to the mock hollar and climb up It until i reach the iron mountain trail. There is so many different routes and trails you can take.
Other recommended trails in the same area: All the trails around this area give you about the same rush they are all steep climbs and fast decents,so take your pick and have a ball.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: I would have to say that the rocks take a lot out of this trail. Call me a pansy, but my preference is smooth, yet fast, singletrack. Nevertheless, this trail was awesome. You have short (but fast) downhills, and the descent into Shaws Gap was phat rabbit. Most people say to go UP Lum, and that is ok, but coming down it was total sweetness. If this trail had some jumps, and a little more mud, it would have got an easy 5 stars. Kahuna handled it great, and i know the old Diamondback Response would have never made that. Dual suspension is what a man needs on something like this. Put it in middle ring, and grind the rocks down to gravel. (I did it all in middle ring, that means YOU CAN TOO!)
Recommended Route: Me and Jonathon started at Beartree Campground, and headed down to US 58, took a right, and went .8 mile to FS 90. Right. Started up, about 1.3 miles, hard uphill with no breaks. At the top, in a gap, we got on the IMT and went to the right. IMT about 5 miles to Lum, and Lum 1 mile to the bathhouse, and our camp and sodas were right there near Lum (yes!)
Other recommended trails in the same area: On saturday, we rode the creeper. We were going to take Taylors Valley Trail across, but missed it. If you want to ride this, look for it right at Creek Junction, as it goes under the two big tressles.
