Explore Park Subaru Trails
23 reviews
4 of 5
The Explore Park/Subaru Trails contain hilly, mountainous terrain with off-camber straightaways, whoops, plenty of climbs and fast drops. There aren't too many protruding roots, yet (May 1999). The climbs, coupled with wet conditions, can make this a challenging ride. The trails are under forest canopy for a shady ride, and there is a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife.
Take 220 South from Roanoke to the Blue Ridge Parkway, take the Parkway East for about 7 miles and the Explore Park is on the South side of the Parkway. The is a small, $3.00 per day, fee for riding the trails, and if you don't bring your own bike, bikes can be rented at the park entrance.
Summary: This is a great local trail system. It is where i got my start in mtn biking 4 years ago. Also the RCO has held a Thurs. night ride here over the winter months.I have rode here up to 4 to 5 times a week over the past 4 years. It really sucks that as of November 15 2007 Explore Park will be closing its gates. No one knows what will happen with the trails. Please come out on the 15th at 6pm.It could be the last ride there.
Recommended Route: Anyone that is accessible after closing.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Any trail that is open to mtn bikers.
Summary: This trail is in awesome shape. It seems to be a lot more burned in compared to when I last rode it. Some of the newer trail sections are a little too tight so the flow is not as good as it could be but it is still a lot of fun.
This trail really worth it if you're in the area.
Recommended Route: Ride the beginner loop for a warm up (plus it is a lot of fun) and then head out onto the more advanced trails.

Summary: Great mix of technical and flowing singletrack. Short, steep climbs tempered with some nice downhills. Lots of roots and rocks on some climbs make going uphill in wet conditions fairly tough! This place is never crowded, always in good shape and very fun. There are a few options for riding here and they are broken down into beginner (about a mile unto itself), intermediate and expert. There is a nice loop called the endurance loop that is full of some GREAT technical stuff and really fun downhills. The whole area is beautiful and is well worth checking out anytime you are around the area.
Recommended Route: Take the beginner trail on the right just as you are leaving the parking lot. This will take about 5-10 minutes and get your legs stretched and blood flowing to start the real riding. Once you are at the end of the beginner, turn left and you'll see the sign for the intermediate trail. Head in and go until you get to the sign marked "downhill", take this trail on the left. Once you exit this, you will be at a 4 way intersection of trail and fireroad. Stay left and avoid the intersection, this continues the intermediate trail. It goes out loops around and cuts back into itself (if you want a real challenge, at this point duck down into the expert tail on the right when you see the sign and you will get another few miles of challenging singletrack) returning you back to the start.

Summary: The trails here are really not technical but it is a good workout. They used to charge 3.00 to ride but they have since dropped the charge so it's a pretty good place to ride because of that . The climbs are not very steep but some are long enough to get your heart pumping. I ride there 4-5 days a week in the spring and summer but hardly ever pass anybody on the trails. You can ride all the trails up there in a couple hours. (About 11 miles.)They are cutting in a few more trails right now but are not open now. You can cut out some of the harder sections if you ride there a few times to familiarize and can cut through the fire roads.
Recommended Route: Beginner to intermediate to downhill to outerloop and back to start
Other recommended trails in the same area: Carvins Cove Pandapas Pond

Summary: What a surprise! I have been mtbiking for over 3 years and have yet to ride this trail until the other day. I went with a friend from work who is in way better shape then me. (I’m a Clydesdale). Anyway, this trail was not very technical but man did it have some short but steep climbs. There is one section where it seems that every 30 yards you ran into a tight switchback about 5 times. This is all while climbing. I got a serious workout and had a great time. This trail is all tight single track with a couple of bridges and one small rideable creek crossing. I think the length is 10 miles or so and is not over run by other riders during the weekdays. I have heard from other riders that due to weather the trail has become more rutted and challenging in the last year or so. Oh and watch out for the baby heads and short but sneaky rock gardens. I'm giving it a > overall cause I hate to climb.
Recommended Route: The whole thing
Other recommended trails in the same area: Carvins Cove (ROANOKE), Peaksview Park (LYNCHBURG), Walnut Creek (Charlottesville).
