Summary:
As a beginner, I enjoy this trail a lot. while its in proximity to everything in Northern Virginia, it still makes you feel like your in the middle of no-where in most parts. A mix of everything, from fast single track to challenging up/downhill sections, to flat gravel roads and stream crossings. With the lack of rain this year, the trail is overall in good shape. there are some very rock and rooty sections though, and some areas that need maintenance. Can be hard to follow sometimes, namely when you have to cross over route 7, and when you pass by some sports fields. my grade = B- , but I dont have much to compare it to.

Recommended Route:
I take it from the back of the reston ice rink, all the way to great falls and back. There are also numerous side trails, all of which are fun-keep a look out.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
great falls

Summary:
Hey folks,

This trail is good for those who want to ride some fast singletrack, with ups and downs and aren't afraid of a little mud. It's like Schaefer Farms, fast as heck. It feels like you're barely pedalling. Just a word though: due to heavy riding/the fact that the trail follows a stream, the trail tends to be muddy. Do everyone a favor and spend 44 seconds placing a few sticks across a mudhole. I do that each time I ride it. The more people that do it, the drier and faster it'll be. I only recommend riding up to Rt. 7, the rest to Great Falls is full of diseased, stagnant water and sand, but if you're trying to make it a daytrip, continue on. You can ride all the way to Great Falls and ride those trails too. Ride safe.

Recommended Route:
-Start at Reston Ice Rink that's right off of Sunset Hills Road. Ride down to the lower area with the dead end. Trail starts here. -Ride for 1-2 miles till you cross a small creek. Immediately after crossing you have 3 choices, R, L or straight. Go straight on the path that's widest and climbs uphill for a long while. -Ride for 1 mile, then you come to soccer & baseball fields. To stay on trail, constantly bear right when confronted with a "y" in the trail. -After the trail heads back into the woods, continue about 1/2 mile till you come to another stream crossing. Continue straight, up the steep hill you come to the cricket fields on the plateau. Be careful of Bangladeshis, they bite. -Contine along the parking lot and stay on the field(as opposed to riding down the paved road to below). You will come to the edge of the plateau and can fly down the hill. -Cross both gravel roads and head to the far right corner of the grassy area. This is where the trail picks back up. -Ride 2 miles before you come to a residential road that intersects with Rt 7 aka Leesburg Pike. Cross 7 and immediately bear right to follow a road that leads to gravel road and Difficult Run

This has been the longest post ever. Fountainhead, Wake, Great Falls, Schaefer(awesome)

Summary:
Started route in Reston, ended in Great Falls (have an annual park pass - I'm a climber and just started to get into mtb). The trail as others have described is pretty much bang-on. The creeks were somewhat high when crossed them - one of the kids road across only to lose traction on some algea and soon found himself in the creek's current *grin* - a little water never hurt but some of the mud proved less then desireable. There were a few points where I had to walk up - it was my second time ever going out on a track and loads fun. I liked that it had a little bit of everything - I'd been on a track in Reston and spent most of the time fighting overgrowth.

Since I recently gave up smoking (again), I managed a nice aerobic workout, which certainly helped (okay, big lie here - was still dying after the game *grin*) in the ultimate frisbee game played on Sunday.

OK. I started on this trail behind the Reston Ice Rink, and it dropped me off at the Lake Fairfax Criciquet fields. Where do I go from there?

Summary:
An awesome trail. It can get a little muddy sometimes but other than that it is amazing. It is mostly flat and at the end of the trail you get the reward of food from a shopping center.

Recommended Route:
Start in Great Falls and go to Reston. When you think the trail has ended go to the W O and D trail and take that to the Reston Town Center.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Great falls Park
