This area has just opened for mountain biking now that the new loop has been added. While short (plan on about an hour), it is really a fun, beautiful and technically challenging trail.
Kudos for Larimer County for being the only public lands agency in Northern Colorado that is building new trails, and ones designed with mountain bikers in mind (except for a few weird 90 degree drops).
The trail starts with a flat single track which has been built to accomodate multiple users. A good warm up before the climb. One short technical section right after the gate is a sign of things to come. The trail runs to the east of the "Devil's Backbone" and then cuts across a wash. Here the fun begins...a 5-10 minute climb to a gorgeous view from above the Backbone, with Long's Peak in the background. From here, there is about a 3 mile loop with lots of fun up and downs. Challenging stuff, but not too much work. Then a curvy spin on the flats back to the parking lot.
The eventual plan is to connect this trail to the Rimrock Trail and come in close to Horsetooth Mtn. Park. That will be epic! Help out by signing up for the trails work day on May 11, 2002 (see Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado website: http://www.voc.org/VOCProjects/VOCProjects_2002.htm)
For now, it is a great ride if you are in the area- not 5 wheels because it is a bit short.
