Overview:
This is a well maintained excellent singletrack ride that takes you by a number of Jemez sights…such as Battleship Rock, McCauley Hot springs, Jemez falls and the rock formations around Las Conchas. Most of the trail meanders through pine and spruce forests, but nice views can be had at various ridgelines along the route.
The ride:
The description here starts at Las Conchas trailhead and ends at Battleship rock. There are 4 entrance points along the way, Las Conchas, East Fork, Jemez Falls, and Battleship rock, so the length of the trip can be cut down by starting at some of the middle parking areas.
For Jemez area trails, the singletrack is well marked. There are a few crossing trails, but if you stick to the most worn route, you'll be fine.
The ride from Las Conchas to East fork is easy smooth singletrack. Near the Jemez river around Las Conchas, there are several bridge/log crossings and a few rocks to trip you up. From East Fork to Jemez Falls, the trail gets progessively rockier, but is not that difficult outside of a few tricky sections. From Jemez falls to Battleship rock, the trail becomes steep, rocky and technical. This section often requires following a trail that threads between and over toaster to dishwasher sized rocks in the middle of the trail.
Other things:
There are numerous camping areas, and bathrooms at all of the trailheads except Las Conchas. The pools at McCauley make a nice spot for a dip in warmer weather.
