South Shore (Fruit) Trail
20 reviews
 4.25 of 5

This is the forum page for the new "South Shore" Trail. This was the Grapefruit trail. There has been alot of activity here latety. There are some fun freeride jumps and a small loop that includes some technical ridge lines that are challenging. Alot of the trail has been there for years, and the new stuff is almost re-creating and adding the fun to a trail that has tons of potential. Thursdays @ 5PM is the group ride and trail work day. We meet @ the St. Josephs church parking lot on Babcock just south of Port Malabar. It''s fun now, and will only get better. Remember how fast Wickham Park changed? You ain''t seen nothin'' yet! We will post trailbuilding and maint. times on this page, so keep an eye out for new postings.

Trail Directions
Just past the Melbourne Tillman canal bridge on Babcock St. take a right off the sidewalk and thru the grassy field. About 50 yards on the right there is a small opening in the trees that goes straight down . Watch you speed and no front brake. The trail follows the canal for a few hundred yards and crosses the dried out(sometimes) creek bed. On the other side, the trail continues up the hill and to the newer stunt sections. It continues all the way to where you go under I-95. Best to go with the group the 1st time.

Summary:
There's good news and bad news and good news again about this trail.
Good news #1: No one's injury caused the ramps, etc., to be torn down. Some canal management workers discovered the trail and took pictures of the woodwork, showed it to their lawyer and the lawyer said to tear it all down.
That's the bad news.
Good news #2: The canal people have no interest in closing the trail. It's good they know about it and still don't want to close it down. The guys I talked to said it wouldn't be possible for them, and they'll probably never cut down the woods that protect the trail. I also asked if benign stuff like creek bridges could be built again and they seemed to think they could, but that would require a formal request and I'm not sure if the trail builders want to go that route.
Anyway, the trail will stay open, and it's awesome.
After riding it some more, I'm even more impressed. It only takes 5 minutes at speed to do the upper trail one way, but I usually do it 4 times before taking a break. Really good stuff; cheers to the builders.
(And the canal people missed one big jump ramp...)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Turkey Creek (little elevation): 5 mins.
Lil-Big Econ (maybe 10 mins. of up-and-down stuff along a canal): 1 hr.
Alafia, Markham, Santos (awesome stuff): 2:30 hours.

Summary:
Nice set of trails for the area. I would recommend it to anyone who lives only 10-15 miles away. There is a lot of potential and people building the trails have some great plans. There was no woodwork (bridges) but I bet there could be more. There were a couple of packs of kids around but they were no problems. I could not find anything on the other side of 95. If these trails continue to get worked on please let us know. Again thanks for building the trails.

Recommended Route:
From 95 north. Take Exit Palm Bay road (516) go to Babcock rd take a right. Go down for about 2 miles on the rt is St Joe's church park in the front. Get on your bike and head south over the canal and turn rt in the field. YOu will see the beaten bike trail and follow down the canal and back to the trails.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
NO....that is the problem.

My rating is based on Santos being the 5 in Florida.

Summary:
I just visited this trail for the first time yesterday, April 19, and found I was a day late. All the wordwork on the trail -- bridges, jumps, etc. -- had been destroyed the day before. Kids on the trail said it was the cops who had been called out by parents of a kid who got hurt on the trail.
Even without the wordwork, the trail has some great ups and downs along the line of Alafia River (but not so technical). So, it's still a fun place. The kids were already working on some dirt ramps, so we can only hope the trail gets re-improved. We can never give up.

Recommended Route:
The low path along the water doesn't have much to it; the higher path has the great stuff.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The trails near Turkey Creek in Palm Bay aren't as bad as people have posted. No big drops, but real twisty and rooty.

I guess I got my answer about the website forum. Freeridesouth forum is already rockin it. Everybody's there, so this will be my last post up here. Man, it's all good what's going on at "the trail"(no more s.shore right?). Just kidding. Better than I could have hoped for, and no long drives to get there! See you on the trail-OUT...

Recommended Route:
Please park at the church. I really don't want to have this place go away too!

Summary:
Trail is really getting fun. Nice and fast. Props to the boys for the new west trail and the huge ladder bridge and huck! Looks like the TOE out there. More banked turns are needed(everywhere). They keep the flow. The old log bridge on the warm up tril is getting sketchy. Somebody tried to fix a few rungs but I think a major overhaul is due for this. Lets put our heads together. New jumps after the abyss are nice. A long skinny bypass to the right would be fun. Maybe going from fat to really skinny since it's a downhill. Seen alot of s. fla. boys up here lately. Can't blame 'em! Also I am e-mailing Matt(the photog)today about the pics he took. Sorry it took so long. Any of you guys who can set us up with a real website (w/ a forum)instead of doing this would be great. I just set this up as the quickest way to talk a couple of years ago. I never thought it would last this long, or reach as many guys. I think this internet thingy might just have a future someday!! Lame!-Out.
