Curt Gowdy State Park
4 reviews
 4.5 of 5

As of summer 2007, 15-plus miles of new trail are now in place and ready to ride. Maps are posted at the trailhead and at trail junctions.
The mileage will increase as new trails being planned and constructed.

Curt Gowdy offers a diverse network of trails for which ratings range from beginner to expert. Most of the trails were handbuilt with mountain bikers specifically in mind.

The system is so new that no trail names have officially been determined. The routes are temporarily designated by letter, with names to be assigned by 2008.

Curt Gowdy State Park is punctuated by granite outcroppings ranging from boulder-size to enormous, and it is this preponderance of rock that defines the mountain biking experience.

Intermediate riders should try Trail A, a four-mile loop that offers a modest degree of technical challenge, some of which can be bypassed by short alternative trails.

More advanced riders will like Trail H, which offers numerous tight spots and rock hurdles, and experts will want to test their mettle on the large, steep granite slabs of the short but sick Trail I.

Beginniners will enjoy the flat and smooth Trail K, which meanders along the shoreline of Granite Springs Reservoir for most of it's nearly three-mile length.

Summary:
Rode "A" loop yesterday. It was easy to find without a trail map. I was hoping they would have some at the entrance to Granite but couldn't find any. There were, however, maps posted at the trailhead and along the route. Once you were on the trail it was very easy to follow. I really enjoyed riding it! Big change from the trails I am normally riding in SE Georgia! I am also going give it a higher aerobic level due to the fact it whooped me in the beginning. I suspect mostly because of the elevation differenct from sea level to what ever it is there.....ha ha. Anyway, I still really enjoyed riding this trail and wished that I would be able to spend more time in the area to sample the rest of the trail system out there!

Summary:
Trail A is a four mile loop that beckons to a wide range of riders, offering a modest degree of technical challenge throughout. Bonus opportunities for advanced riders wanting to hone their skills can be found at the so-called ‘Rock Gym’ and or at nearby Hardy’s Rock.

Trail E twists and turns along the banks of Middle Crow Creek and is suitable for all types of riders, from beginners to expert. A few technical spots challenge riders as they make their way to the trail’s western terminus at the so-called Hidden Falls, but these spots can easily be negotiated by dismounting and walking a few steps.

Trails B & C, accessed from Trail A, wind around and over rocky knobs which distinquish the north side of Curt Gowdy State Park. Both trails offer rock gardens, short steeps and slickrock sections guaranteed to bring smiles and possibilities bumps and bruises. Specific challenges include Offcamber and Kevins slabs and several huck spots.

Trail I may be one Curt Gowdy’s shortest designated trails, but it’s also the steepest. A prominent feature of this advanced-to-expert route is the extreme Fishtail Slab, which with a pitch exceeding 45 degrees, demands respect from even most hard-core rider.

Trail J climbs Corkscrew Hill, which presents a great opportunity for intermediate riders looking to improve their singletrack climbing skills. It reaches a high point along the toe of the notorious Fishtail Slab of Trail I, and from this point, rides can head in either direction for a flowing and exhilarating downhill run.

Trail K, mostly flat, wide and smooth, appeals mainly to beginner and novice riders, as it hugs the shoreline of Granite Springs Reservoir for close to three miles. The trail is a perfect venue for families with young children or those simply wanting to experience off-road bicycling for the first time.

Trail L snakes through numerous granite outcroppings along the park’s western boundary. Intermediate and advanced riders alike will enjoy the many twists and turns as well as vistas of prominent rock formations including Stone Temple and the Chameleon. The trail’s highpoint connects to an alternate loop which features a series of steep slab climbs guaranteed to tax even the fittest rider’s legs and lungs.

Recommended Route:
Beginner: Trail K out and back.

Intermediate: Trail A Loop and/or Trail E out and back.

Advanced: Trail A to Trails B and C; Trail E to Trail H.

Expert: Trail J to Trail I

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Headquarters Trail or Goat Trail downhill off of Summit Loop (Happy Jack).
