La Crosse Trails aka Human Powered Trails

Double track on top in the open fields and singletrack in the woods. This trail was just opened in the fall of 2001 and is still being expanded. The local mountainbiking group (Velo Club?) had a big hand in this so thank them for their hard work.

Once off the top of the bluff and into the woods the trails turn into expert singletrack. The singletrack involves steep climbs and decents with tight switchback turns. there are lots of obstacles (i.e. roots and rocks)on the trail.

This trail is not for the faint of heart. The swithbacks are located on steep terrain so take the turn too wide you end up tumbling down the wooded hillside. The trail can be slick in spots. If the trail is wet, riding becomes extremely difficult due to the steep terrain. It is hard to keep a grip on the trail.

I rated the skill level extreme because of the tight switchback and grade.

Summary:
Traveled to the Lacrosse area for work and found this trail on MTBR. What a great ride. This trail has a lot to offer anyone. The logs are a nice touch and the trails are well marked and incredibly taken care of. Nice job to the "Velo?" club for maintaining an outstanding trail system. If you are in Lacrosse looking for a great ride you have to ride the HPT. One thing to keep in mind if you are from out of the area the soil and tree roots can be a bit slick. I ride in the desert and mountains in So Cal and my Panaracer fire XC's didn't seem to be up to the task. The guys at Bikes LTD in LaCrosse hooked me up with a new set equal to the challenge.

Recommended Route:
the TT route seems to cover most of the trails. I followed that and then looked around for anything I missed.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
TNT is a pretty sweet downhill run. It is right across the street from the HPT trails. Nice climb back up too!!!

Summary:
Wow!!! I was in town visiting and thought I'd check out if there were any good local trails....and this one takes the cake!!!!! This is almost one of my favorite trails of all the ones I have been on so far. Lots of sweet singletrack with lots of decents and winding. Watch your elbows, it gets narrow at some spots! If your in the LaCrosse area and you mountain bike, you HAVE to ride this trail. Enjoy!!

Recommended Route:
I just followed the black arrows for the singletrack, some of the blue tracks are also difficult. It was all fun.

Summary:
The LaCrosse velo club really works hard on these trails. This is one of the greatest systems I've ridden. Steep climbs, rocks, log obstacles, tight switchbacks, and nice downhill sections. The trails are very well built. They are also adding new trails in the near future. If you get a chance to ride here, do it. You will not be dissapointed.

Recommended Route:
They recently changed it to a one way recommended route. There is a map in the parking lot and good trail signage.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Levis mounds in Neillsville, Lowes Creek in Eau Claire, Holzinger in Winona, MN.

Recommended Route:
Any of them. Just follow the signs and you will have a blast. Be ready to either ride over some logs or dismount a few times. Its a great challenge.
