CAM-ROCK 3
24 reviews
4.29 of 5
A short (1.5 mile?) outer grassy cross country ski trail outer loop with two loops of short but excellent singletrack as well.
take CT HWY B south from downtown cambridge, go into rockdale where you will hang a sharp right. When the road goes back to the left you want to go straight. CAM-ROCK 3 will be on the right about half-mile down the road. E-mail me for better directions.
Summary: As the Trail Boss of Cam-Rock trails I thought I would update the reviews and information of Cam-Rock. The rub on Cam-Rock was always that it had some great trails, but it was just too short. Well that was then, this is now. As of this spring the single track mileage at Cam-Rock III has doubled to about 6 miles, and more is on the way.
From the first downhill you will see the changes. You no longer dump out onto doubletrack at the bottom, but take some sweet sigletrack across a prairie to the Rockdale Roundabout. From there you can continue on to the new Connector into the new Cam-Rock IV park, or double back to the old trails.
The Connector is a sweet open and flowing trail. Here you can carry a lot of speed and have a lot of fun (some nice kickers for air), or take it slower for the less experienced riders and keep the wheels on the ground.
The Expert Loop is more technical than ever, especially the Bobsled Run. This is a real test of the riders skill in bike handling and balance. And if you can ride the rocky trail up out of the ravine, you know you are on your game today.
The beginner Loop is still a sweet ride that is nice twisty hardpack through the woods, with a couple options for air if you are feeling spunky.
The final loop back to the parking lot is a nice combination of everything else at the park. Some tight off-camber turns, some nice banked corners, rocky dry streambed crossings, rocky rooty climbs, and finish it off with a ride through the prairie and return to the parlking lot.
Don't forget to stop at Heather's in Rockdale for some nourishment and a refreshing drink after the ride. She is a big supporter of CORP (www.MadCityDirt.org) the group responsible for these trails.
Recommended Route: Ride it all! If you have your big boy pants on don't miss the Expert Loop and the Bobsled run. Don't miss the new connector, it is a blast with the Rip-N-Ride section a real treat.
Take the Downhill Run to the Mayors Meander to Rockdale Roundabout. Continue on the Connector to Heathers Hill, beneath the Century Oak, through the Sumac Slalom to the Oak Slalom. Then drop the Fist Lady Launch to the Kiddie Kickers To Dave's Deer Path. At the turnaround cruise Raspberry Fields Forever to the top and drop into Rip-N-Ride. At the Roundabout ride the hill to the top and Expert Loop awaits on th right. Ride (slowly!!) the RockWork drop over Twin Mounds, switchback to Nettum Meadows and the Flapjack Flats. Into the technical challenge of Bobsled Run and the rocky climb up out of the ravine(if you can!). Ride across the Expert Cliffs to the last challenge of the dropoff at Wilderness Steeps. From here the challenge has been conquered and just more fun twisty track through the beginner loop to the doubletrack. Don't forget the Intermediate Loop for a combination of all the great features of the park as you head back to the Parking lot.

Summary: CAM Rock 3 has a great downhill blast from the playgound with a good run out to allow you to get it back under control before rolling into the tall grass. The singletrack trails are fun with some angry bits, and do require constant attention. The moss covered rocks are quite slick when wet or damp, so allow ample drying time before venturing out here.
There is an advanced loop of singletrack which is quite awesome, but very technical. If you can't clear the log piles at the start with confidence, DO NOT PROCEED...you will be walking, or bleeding, or both. Highlights are a 2' drop into a rock covered downhill with limited run out, narrow passages through hard to see boulders and a descent through a gully set up like a 1/2 pipe...very cool.
This trail is about 20 minutes from my house...so the proximity effect will allow me to give it a higher rating than I might, if I had to travel for it.

Summary: It would appear as though there is some confusion concerning the cam-rock parks. Allow me to provide insight:
Cam-rock 1: short double track, very non-technical course. According to parks dept. it will soon be attached to a cam-rock 3 via bridge.
Cam-rock 2: Just a bit more technical then cam-rock 1, fun with a friend when you have the urge for a race. Still, a bit boring for the more experienced rider. -
Cam-rock 3: two 1 mile long single tracks, very technical, great work out. Similar to Blue Mounds, but shorter in length. Wear helmet and full finger gloves. Don't ride when wet, very frustrating
Recommended Route: Cam-rock 3

Summary: This is a great pit stop for a "during the week ride". Very tight track with some crazy berry bushes. If you like Muir's blue run up top you will dig this. Its short but there are three different trails and you can do them time and time again to perfect your skills. There is a trail map availabe so study it before you go. Don't visit if we have had alot of rain. It makes the whole kazam very slippery and not fun at all.
Recommended Route: All three runs.

Summary: I rode this one while home on leave; I was afraid that nothing in Wisconsin would hold my interest for single track but I was wrong. Quick climbs, short curvy desents and enough rocks and roots to keep you honest. Not much in the way of a workout but it is a really fun trail. The trail head took some time to find but it was worth it. Thanks to the folks at Williamson Bikes and Fitness out of Mad-Town for pointing me in that direction.
Recommended Route: Stick with the posted route so you don't kill yourself or someone else.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Nothing in this area but Baraboo is only an hour or so away.
