Bluebird Springs

Tight rocky single track with a nice stream crossing. Three one mile climbs and several short steep ones. This trail was designed and made by the LaCrosse Velo club, so you can be sure that it is REAL mountain biking. These trails are very challanging and very fun. Cost is two dollars for a day and i believe twenty dollars for an entire season. If you are more interested contact bluebird springs, or stop by Smith's Cycling and Fitness in LaCrosse, they will know what's up.
From LaCrosse Take Highway 16 out toward Onalaska at the last set of lights before you get to the mall, take a right on county road B and follow it untill you get to smith valley road (it will be on your right and is past the golf course), take that road all the way out, following the signs (there is only one sign, and if you stay on smith valley road, you won't even need to pay attention to it). If you get lost along the way just stop at Walsh Golf Center, they should help you out.
Summary: I don't think anyone actually rides at Bluebird Springs anymore. Since HPT has come into it's own they make these fall line cut trails look like a hack job. Plus they don't cut the grass back as it grows over the trails, there are weeds that rip your arms to shreds when you go by them. All this and you have to pay some drunk person at the campground to ride. How awsome is that!
Recommended Route: Go back into La Crosse, go up to HPT and ride for free.

Summary: Long climb gives the legs a workout. After the climb you encounter the steep more direct bomb down the side of the bluff. Be careful of ruts in the trail from erosion, especially while riding the downhill. Several variations in the trail loops if you do not want to climb to the top. Great trails to ride while in the La Crosse area
Recommended Route: Warm up with a short loop that cruises about halfway up the bluff. Then take on the climb to the top of the bluff when the legs are warmed up and enjoy the decent to the bottom. Careful for the erosion obstacles

Summary: First time on this trail. Very tough climbs....fun descent. I'm a pretty inexperienced rider, and I can see these trails will get me some good experience. I was disappointed to see a lot of ATV's on these trails. Every time I got a good cadence going on a climb....I had to pull over and let an ATV through, or risk being run over. It was my understanding that ATV's weren't allowed on these trails. The trails aren't very technical, either. I can see where a FS bike would be much better than my hardtail for this type of downhill descent. The trails are very cool to ride, although I'll base my review on the ATV problem. I'm going to try to find out if the ATV's are supposed to be there or not. If not, I plan to visit often. If they can ride there, I'll never go back.
Recommended Route: Just pick one.
Other recommended trails in the same area: New to the area....this was my first ride.

Ridden Trail: Once a year

Summary: I rode there today, May 15 2003, and was kind of disapointed. First off, the owners sold some land and now all the fun stuff to the left of the office is off limits..still possible to ride though. Not very technical riding but takes alot of endurance for some long hills. Basicly, you trudge op a super long logging road and when you get to the top you turn around because you'd be tresspassing, so turn around and blast down the hills. I have to admit there is some fun down hill but I wouldn't ride here unless you tapped out all the other local riding. Not bad, not great.
Recommended Route: Just go out and ride...forget about the stupid map at the office...its missing so many trails and hard to figure out.
Other recommended trails in the same area: LaCrosse Bluff trails - Awesome!

Summary: This trail is all up then it is all down. Lumber trail on the very steep up with lots of loose rocks. Single track on the way down. Costs $1 to get in. Worth it. This trail will get your heart in shape. Beginner to imtermediate technical rider. Long distance runner stamina to get up the damn hill.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hands down, the best trail in the whole midwest is Holtzinger Lodge in Winona. Without a doubt, beats the Kettles.
