Peninsula State Park

There is about 10-15 miles of singletrack, along with some paved and gravel paths. Not too technical or fast, but enough to have a good time.

Summary:
There are really two separate bike trail systems within the park. There is a family style trail loop (gravel and pavement) which mostly follows the shore line and there is a mountain biking trail system which is in the forest. The family loop is free and was crowded with people. The mountain biking trails cost $4 a day and it appears that few people ride there.

Both trail systems have few hills--the overall elevation change is very small anywhere in the park. The biggest challenge on the family trails is avoiding people. A majority of the mountain biking trails are really cross country ski trails that are smooth and are very easy to ride--the trail width ranges from single track to two-track. There is a newer section of trail that is 3-4 miles long that is true single track mountain biking. Again, there isn't any significant elevation change but at least this part of the trail system provides some technical challenge. This trail was obviously built by bikers and takes full advantage of the forested area. There isn't much for rocks but there are a lot of roots. This technical section is located mostly north of Middle Road.

Read the following only if you plan on renting bikes:

There are two bike rental places in Fish Creek right by the park entrance which makes this a very convenient place to ride if you're on vacation in Door County and don't want to drag your bike with you on the whole trip. In my opinion, Nor Door Bikes is the only place to go. They didn't have a huge selection of mountain bikes (comfort biking is the main business around there) but they had what we needed. The place was fair with rental rates and was happy to install my clipless pedals. It wasn't the friendliest place I've been to--they have quite a volume of people renting so there wasn't time to B.S. about the local trails. And they weren't the most professional--two of their workers were yelling at each other. Also, my front wheel skewer was loose so as always--check your equipment before you ride.

I checked at the other rental place (I think it was called "Edge of Park") and even though they rent mountain bikes, the girl said they didn't want you to ride on "the real hard trails" so don't bother wasting your time with that place. Their rates were higher than Nor Door, also.

Recommended Route:
Pick up a trail map from one of the adjacent bike shops or from the park office where you pay your $4.

Summary:
These are some nice trails to bring the wife and kids to ride, and there is plenty to do and see in this beautiful park. In 2003, an additional 3-4 miles of trail not previously open to bikes, will be opened. Part of this additional loop will be honest-to-goodness singletrack, built by bikers for bikers. Let's hope this trend continues.

Recommended Route:
There are miles and miles of trails...take your pick.

Summary:
I really like the trails. I no longer liek the real technical riding (liek Baird Creek in Green Bay), so these trails are nice. You can ride fast without needing to clip-out and stop. there are still some small climbs and bumps. The trails loop and intersect so fun to ride. Beginners can ride as not too technical and can easily walk through anything dificult. Downhillers and anyone wanting rel technical riding should look elsewhere. A few years back, it had been real wet and a long section was under about a foot and a half of water, but has been dry past few years. Also good road rding in the park - the park is beautiful.

Recommended Route:
all "off-road" trails

Once a week

Summary:
There is riding for every level here. I ride these trails a couple times a week. They are more XC oriented, but there are some good dh sections. If you want to the hit the good stuff you need to ride the hiking trails, the biking trails way to easy. There some nice dips that you can catch some air, and most of the trails are fast as long as you pick the right line. Sunset trail has a downhill section that allows one to jump across the whole road if you get enough speed. There are some great trails here, if you hook up with a local ripper they can show you the trails you should take.

Recommended Route:
enter thru the golf course entrance, bust a left onto eagle trail just before the tower. take eagle trail down to nicolete bay. GREAT TECH. DOWNHILL

Ketle Marane in southern wisconsisn

Summary:
These trails were really fun. There are a couple of climbs -- not too bad, but enough to give you a challenge-- lots of quick turns and bumps. These trails are great for a beginner, but an advanced rider can also have a good ride here. In addition, this park is beautiful.

Recommended Route:
See above (the trails are really well marked but take the "off-road" trails because much of the park is paved paths).
