Summary:
The thing that makes these trails great is that you're way out in the wilderness. You never really get farther than a few miles from a road, but the forest is old, lush, and beautiful and there are few other people on the trails. I saw only two other bikers in the four hours I was out there.

After reading some reviews, I decided to ride the Anvil trail, which connects to the Nicolet trail. I decided that if I had the time and energy, I would head over to the Nicolet trails. Well, the trail descrption on this site is not exactly accurate - it says the trail level is extreme. It's more like beginner to intermediate. Sigletrack? No, mostly wide doubletrack. I headed to the Nicolet trails to see if they would offer more of a challenge . . . Pretty much the same. Luckily, I found the Hidden Lakes trail which starts from the Nicolet. It's a large, 13 mile loop (or more, if you take some of the other trails from it) that winds in between many small lakes. The views of the lakes are pretty spectacular. In a couple sections, the trail is right on the edge of the lake. It only got technical in a few spots toward the end, but I wasn't disappointed because it's such a beatutiful trail, and there's plenty of it (over 40 miles). Plus there was a cool creek crossing (no bridge). If you're looking for a more techical challenge, go to Razorback ridge, west of Eagle River near Sayner. It's one of the best trails in the state.

Recommended Route:
Nicolet trail to Hidden Lakes. Easy to get lost! Know where you're going.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Razorback Ridge

Summary:
These trails consist of a wide variety of trail types ranging from gently undulating ski trails suitable for beginners, to technical singletrack suitable for advanced riders. Everything in between is present as well. WIsconsin's best kept secret lies within!! Trails are maintained by Northwoods Bicycle Society(NOBS) in agreement with USFS. NOBS also has Monday night rides meeting at the Anvil Lake Trail Head every Monday starting May 13 this year. See ya at 6:00. Although the major systems are well mapped and marked, there are several trails that are not that are UNBELIEVABLE. Please e-mail me for info or call at 715-479-1862.

Recommended Route:
Anvil Trails, Nicolet North, several unnamed portions of single track connecting them.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Shannon Lake, Razorback Ridge, Vilas County Forest

Summary:
This area consists of the Anvil Lake trail system, the Nicolet North trail system, and several unnamed stretches of singletrack. I would advise you go with an experienced rider who knows this area, as it can be complex and you can get lost. Hook up with local riders at joebike@nnex.net.

Recommended Route:
All of it, except for a portion that winds along a lake, as it is a brutally hard rock garden. YUMMY!
