Elroy-Sparta State Park Trail
5 reviews
 3.8 of 5

Great limestone trail through wooded valleys and small towns for the whole family. Several campgrounds are found along the way. Three century-old railroad tunnels (dug out by pick ax in the 1870s) are part of the trail. The Elroy-Sparta trail links with the LaCrosse River Trail at Sparta.

Summary:
I road this trail back in 94, and at that time it was 64mi long, i did the whole thing in about 5 hrs and loved it. I plan to go back next spring. Yes it isnt a offroad trail, but it is built on an old railroad, its crushed limestone. so its pretty flat and great for speed riders like myself. there are (3) one mile long pitch black tunnels. They are awesome! Make sure you have a lite source with you and walk or ride very slowly through the tunnels. There are also water that leaks in so you might get a little wet. One of the most senic trails ive ever been on!!!

Recommended Route:
Do the whole thing even if it takes you the entire day it will be worth it.

Summary:
Trail is as stated, great for family rides. (or out with the wife in my case) colors were peak when my wife and I rode and just beautiful. We have every intention to ride this trail regularly. My wife made 28 of the 32 miles befor I had to return alone for the car. (her knee gave out after a crash 2 weeks earlyer on a short off-trail adventure)

Nice leisure ride. Great for road bikes.

Summary:
Not a mountain bike trail but is the original rails to trail bike trail. This trail meanders through several great little towns that have many eating establishments to offer. This is a great trail for begininers due to the limited incline. My favorite stop on the trail is Diamond Lil's--great atmosphere- and GREAT!!!!!!!!!!Food

Recommended Route:
One Route

If you are a cyclist looking for a challenge, this isn't your trail. If you are a beginer or just looking for some great scenery--especially in the fall-this is your trail. Tunnels add great interest. Many campgrounds & B&B's if you want to split up the trip. Great for Kids!

Summary:
This is not a Mt bike trail
But it is a great family ride
Railroad grade flat less than 3 degree elevation
The tunnels are a highlight, total of three tunnels
One should walk the tunnels as posted
Take a light jacket and flashlights, openings get fogged in at times and get can get dark in there,
Makes it fun for couples
For a shorter day with young children,
Start in the middle of the trail and do 1,2 0r 3 tunnels then double back
Total length 32 miles one way if I recall correctly
There was a van service to return you to you car, not sure if it is still operative
Many bridges over the creeks, several towns along the way for food and drinks, and my favorite ICE CREAM

Recommended Route:
Start in the Middle and enjoy the tunnels right away

Other recommended trails in the same area:
several trail connect in the area

Summary:
This is NOT a mountain bike trail. It is a groomed limestone trail and isn't very steep. It does have some REALLY cool tunnels though. they are really long and cool like caves but bring a flashlight because sometimes it is dark and you cant see either end

Recommended Route:
there is only one route
