Weekend Warrior Summary: Got a chance to ride the Rock Lake trails 7 miles east of Cable. I got maps at the Half Moon bike shop in Hayward. Best ride I have had in a long time. I was riding a rigid 29er single which worked well for me. We rode for 3 hours without seeing anyone else and still have over half the trail left to explore for another day (or 2). It's a fun, well made and pretty challenging trail sytem. The trails were well marked and in great shape. Hildebrand loop was especially fun and challenging! Thanks Camda for the great work!!

Racer Summary: Local perspective...
The CAMBA Trail system is comprised of six major clusters including Delta (four trail heads), Drummond (two trail heads), Cable (two trail heads), Seeley (two trail heads), Namakagon, and the newest cluster just outside of Hayward (two trail heads). The system is located in and around the Chequamegon National Forest. CAMBA has adopted an area of roughly 1600 square miles. 300 miles of marked and mapped trail are within the system... Of course as a local I am a bit biased but frankly this is one of the best places to ride mountain bikes in Midwest.
Living just 5 minutes by bike from the newly completed (late '06)Hatchery Creek Trail head, I have ridden this cluster in virtually all sorts of weather, both day and night. Night rides on this new cluster are a blast! The new trailhead and portion adds a really nice piece to the overall CAMBA system (Western most point). Big time kudos to all who contributed and worked their butts off to get er done!
From just outside Hayward you can now ride single track to Mosquito Brook road. From there you can either ride the Birkie Trail northeast to County Rd OO, or there are numerous single track diversions along the way - some more difficult than others, all nicely marked.
From OO east the trails get hillier adding additional fun and higher heart rates all the way to Telemark and east to Rock Lake.
All in all, the CAMBA trail system is truly one of a kind - well worth a vacation for a week! After which you'll want to move here - like I did!! You will not be disappointed.
For more detailed information go to www.cambatrails.org (great maps and local informatino). Recommended Route: My favorite ride is to run the Hatchery single track east to Mosquito Brook road, and then east on the Birkie trail to and around the Sugarbush loop, then return to Hatchery Creek trail head on the return single track. Usually takes about 1:30 to 1:45, longer if you are a novice or are touring.
There are several other trails marked and mapped east of Mosquito Brook running up to County Road OO (riding hard, you can make it from Hatchery Creek to 'OO' via the single track in about 90 minutes, using just the Birkie trail its just over an hour - again, varies by ability and pace).
If you're looking for a solid 3 hour training ride with some good bail-out options try going from Hatchery to OO and back. It's one of my training staples during the week (or on a weekend) and gives you every type of riding: fast tight single track, moderately technical stuff, flat out downhills, and grinding uphills - really an awesome overall workout and really fun!!
Other recommended trails in the same area: 1. Ojibwa trail (Cable Cluster) - big fun.
2. Chequamegon 40 race course headed north from OO and Janet rd (when marked later in teh summer) to Telemark and back - great long weekend ride...
3. Rock Lake Trails - pure fun and beautiful.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail is the best single track in Northern WI, maybe in the whole Midwest. CAMBA has done a great job the past two years building new IMBA standards trails and moving the route off the X-country ski trails. We stayed at the Zugspitze Inn at Garmisch USA Resort (great bar) and rode one mile to the Namakagon Town Hall Trailhead. The new single track begins here and connects to the Rock Lake Tail Loop. The technical single track will challenge any rider. Trails are well marked. Do yourself a favor and ride this trail. You won't regret it. Any previous trail reviews are obsolete. It's all good now Recommended Route: Start at Namakagon Town Hall Trailhead (corner of Hwy M and D). Look for trailhead behind the gas pumps. Stay on Namakagon Trail to trail marker N32. Turn right and follow Glacier Trail to Rock Lake Trail- head. Follow Rock Lake Trail to N8 and turn right. Take Hilderbrand Lake Loop to N12 and turn left. At N11 turn right. Make another right at N31 and then left at N32. Now you'll be back on the Namakagon Trail. Follow back to trailhead or if you are getting tired, turn left when you cross the gravel road and take the gravel two miles to Highway M. Other recommended trails in the same area: Ojibwa Trail at Telemark Resort

Racer Summary: Ojibwe single track: Don't let some reviews make you think this is a difficult trail, cause it's really not, it's just a blast. Aerobic a 5? No Way! Technical? Hardly. Wow, compared to Grandma's driveway maybe. Just fun fun fun. Recommended Route: Go out and have a blast, and after you ride the full loop and get to know it, darn right, make some of your own variations, get off onto some other more hilly ski trail sections, or unmarked doubletrack.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Rock Lake - The new singletrack looks promising. Hopefully soon there will be more trail. Kinda sucks that there are so many other trails and roads in the area..you really need a map for the trails up here, its easy to get on the wrong trail. Recommended Route: The maps kinda suck as far as telling you where to start these trails. When you pull in the lot, Fee station is on the right and bulletin board is on the left. Single track starts from behind bulletin board then crosses the return trail a ways up. The singletrack coming out the woods about 40-50 feet from the board is the exit. Other recommended trails in the same area: Ojibwe is what you want if your into singletrack.
