Odessa Lake View Trail

Average Rating:    (2 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

Odessa is about an hour SW of Spokane and the official trail starts at the west end of town (it's well marked with signage) and heads NW through classic western rim rock and scab lands to an old ranch now under BLM management. There are numerous trails in the area; some are difficult single track (barely discernible at times) and others are jeep trails where you can ride side-by-side. There is (free) camping at the ranch about 7 miles north of Odessa on the highway to Wilbur, WA (21). Beautiful desert scenery. Keep dogs and kids under control as it's likely there are rattlesnakes in the area June through September. Best riding is October/November or April/May when the weather is cooler; bring water any time. The link is a .pdf map published by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). See more photos and reports under "Moses Lake Area Trails" in the forums.

This is a desert trail with both single and double track portions; in fact some of the route is shared with vehicles (the northern portion). Northern access is via highway 21 to Lakeview Ranch Road and then 3 miles to the ranch house (buildings on the west of the road, ranch house on the east side along with the former Pacific Lake (dry)). There are loops leading off the trail and another trail leading from the ranch buildings west past a couple of lakes. The double track area is suitable for side-by-side riding. Some of the trails are hard to follow (but some have signposts). In general you can ride a trail until you feel like it's too difficult and just turn back. No grinding uphills (but a couple spots where I have had to push) or heart racing downhills. Just a good x/c ride through the desert and rim rock.

Recommended Route:
The trail from Odessa north is 12.9 miles and can be shuttled easily. You can ride it in either direction. If you camp at the Ranch you can ride the marked "TRAIL" west of the BLM readerboard up into the hills and past a couple of lakes to intersect with the main trail. There is also a loop north of this intersection (about 3 miles from the north trailhead).
