Summary:
First of all this is riding down Lightning Creek trail not doin the starvation/blue buck ride which is being described by other two reviewers.
Watch out for cows. Riding up 406 was a lot cooler i'm assuming then riding up the forest roads. Even though it's a shorter route as far as miles i'm thinkin that you could make it up faster because your pedaling the whole way. Where as 406 theres quite a bit of hike a bike and unless you really in shape it can burn you out quick. But i still enjoyed the scenery and the coolness of the creek that u ride above.
Going down Lightning Creek trail is a blast. I was getting burnt out on the sandy runs after a while though. I have no idea how anyone could ride up this trail when the sand was like it was when i rode on it.
Plenty of rocks to make it challenging as well. All descent with only a few spots to pedal and some nice creek crossings to cool your feet off at the end.
Watch out for rattlesnakes. It looked like a stick in the trail to me. Good thing i was haulin ass it was starting to coil as soon as i got by it. Needless to say i was haulin a lot more ass after i got by it.
Fun trail next time i'm doin blue buck for sure it sounds like the real deal as far as singletrack by Winthrop.

Summary:
This is the best ride that I have done in Washington.
Be prepared with lots of water and food. It is a ride that will stay with you years after you have done it. There are a lot of large rocks and some ledges at the very top of Blue Buck but it doesn't last long before you can really let it go. This is what mtn. biking should be all about. Earning a great downhill ride.

Recommended Route:
Same as Alex. Up Lightning Creek and down Blue Buck.

Summary:
You start on the lightning creek trail around 3000 feet and head up. the trail is a little bit sandy in some spots because of the free range cattle but a very fun and chalenging climb. It is a 13 mile up hill ride to the top of the 6700 foot starvation Mt. I am only 16 and I made it up with not to much trouble. Then once to the top take the blue buck creek trail which is a bad ass 13 mile down hill single track. Fly down that but leave you skirt at home because it can get pretty sketchy along the ridge. but don't be a pussy and ride you brake all the way down just let loose and go with the flow. The down hill was very worth climbing. Very awsome trail just hope you are in great shape to make it to the top. It is a 26 mile ride and takes you from 5 and a half hours up depending on what shape you are in. I am planing to go back many times to ride here. Good trail for any one it gets funner and harder the faster you go.

Recommended Route:
Ride up the lightning Creek trail to the top of Starvation Mt. Then take the blue buck creek trail back down to the bottom where you started. Stop at the local bike shop in winthrop. they are very nice and will hook you up with a map and tell you how to get there.
