Middle Fork Teanaway

4 of 5
The Middle Fork of the Teanaway River Trail is a wild and remote ride, similar to the West Fork of the Teanaway. It is longer than the WF Trail, but lacks the high Basalt cliffs of the West Fork. The Middle Fork has a few more crossings than the West Fork, but not enough to matter much. You should ride the West Fork once, before you try the Middle Fork.
This trail is described as a loop starting from Wish Poosh campground. It might be worth shuttling from there. Several shuttle options are possible.
From Wish Poosh, or the gas station just south of it, head north on the highway toward Salmon la Sac campground. Hang a right on the gravel road (see WF Teanaway ride).
When you get to the top of the trail climb, pass the Jolly Mountain Downhill trail, and then pass the West Fork Trail intersection. You will come to a high ridge with good views of Mt Stuart. If you pull off left of the trail at a viewpoint, you will see a sign for Jolly Creek trail, and Yellow Hill trail. Do not take the yellow hill trail which goes to the top of Jolly Mountian. The Jolly Creek trail is behind you. It goes up hill for a short bit, then descends steeply into the drainage north of Jolly mountain. The decent is loose and steep and will involve hike-a-bike. You will come to a T with Middle fork trail after a few miles. This is where the creek crossings begin. There are at least a dozen and a half crossings.
As you pass several other trail intersections, just stay on Middle Fork Trail. This is the fun part of the ride. It is fast and rolling through here. You will see lots of wild huckleberries, Deer, Elk, Grouse, etc. It’s remote, so stay upright and have the chain tool at the ready!
Finally you will come to the trail end. (The last three miles have been rough going with lots of loose rocks, mud, crossings, and overgrowth.) Hang a right on the road to get to the West Fork trail head (there is a sign). Cross the west fork where the bridge has washed out. This is a very unlikely road, but it is correct. There are big berms in the road as it climbs up from the creek. Take a right(?) and another right. (Follow the directions in the west fork description from here.) It climbs for several miles. Finally you will start the long decent down a gravel road and come out between Wish Poosh and the Gas station area.
43 miles, 4500 feet of vertical.

Summary: This ride for starters is one for the memory books. It is a combination of a grueling climb to very pleasant single track to down right challenging descents that will make you get off and walk then back to excellent single track through 20 plus creek crossings.Ride finishes up with a long dirt road out and optional pavement if you dont shuttle. Incredible views of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and the Stuart Range. The Forest Rd. climb is steep in spots but dont let it deter you from the real pain to come. Ha! FS recommended and try doing the West Fork first before attempting this ride thogh they are very similar.
Recommended Route: This ride started on forest road 4315 off of the Salmon la Sac rd. Reach trail 1349 and follow past trail 1307 on left, then pass trail 1353 (West Fork)on right. Go until you reach a lookout on the left. This is also the trail head for Jolly creek to the left which is hard to see. To go straight would take you to Jolly Mt. Follow trail 1355 (Jolly Creek) to reach Middle fork. Take right and follow middle fork trail to road and take a right. This road will take you to the West fork trail head. Road 113 This can be a confusing place to navigate, but I have found my way out a couple of different ways. Set a coarse heading west. Road 113 and 4305 will reach S.R. 903 (Salmon la Sac rd).
