Butte Camp Trail (238A)
0 reviews
 0 of 5

The Butte Camp trail provides access to the circum-Mount St Helens Loowit Trail. It is fairly short but very scenic. Best access is from the east side of Red Rock Pass until the November 2006 flood damage has been repaired. Cars should park at the beginning of the flood damaged road and then ride up to the Pass. Higher centered vehicles can drive up to the Pass from the East side.
At Red Rock Pass the trail (Toutle Trail, Nr 238) climbs up on to a blocky lava flow which lasts for maybe a quarter of a mile. You will cross a ski trail and eventually come to the junction of trails 238 (Toutle) and 238A (Butte Camp). Continue on uphill. For the most part the trail is on sandy/rocky basalt lava flows on the lower portion before arriving. The trail flattens at Butte Camp where there is fresh water, before making a climb up and around Butte Camp Dome thru old growth fir forest. The forest thins as you reach timberline just below the Loowit Trail. The Loowit to the east of Butte Camp Trail crosses several large blocky lava flows and is mostly a hike a bike proposition. The Loowit to the north of Butte Camp Trail has several large washouts, from the November 2006 floods, which hopefully will be repaired in the near future. When those washouts and the one on the Toutle Trail are repaired the loop formed by the Butte Camp, Loowit and Toutle Trails is one of the best loops around for being full of a variety of terrain, habitats and high scenic value. Note that the Loowit north of the South Fork Toutle Trail is open only to hiking.
