Cross Country Rider Summary: This is the "have it" so "use it" Rils to Trails stuff. The grade is mellow, the surface is variable & loose. The redeeming value is long, really long. From West to East...
North Bend to Hyak - 15 to 20 miles depending on where you start/stop in the megalopolis... trail well used, decent surface. Cool big tunnel. Bring lights!
Hyak to Cle Elum - 29 miles loose and variable
Cle Elum to Ellensburg - 26 miles loose and variable, cool tunnels. Bring lights!
Ellensburg to Kittitas - 5.5 miles watch the grass grow
Kittitas to Vantage - 28 miles loose sandy pit of death with some cool sights. Bring lights! Recommended Route: See http://www.traillink.com/ViewTrail.aspx?AcctID=6055769 for info.

Weekend Warrior Summary: It's a sand box with a bunch of rocks thrown in the cuts. Really unsuitable for bikes unless you're trying for an endurance contest to see how much sand you can tolerate.
Take lots of water, snake bite kit, and be ready for sharp rocks. I didn't get a flat but I wimped and pushed the bike through the worst of the sharp rocks.
Be prepared to be in the desert for hours and away from help. Recommended Route: Get the Iron Horse State Park brochure from Washington State Parks. Info for ALL trail heads is in there or look up Iron Horse State Park on web. Other recommended trails in the same area: Ride the other sections of the trail. I have done Easton-Hyak and Cedar Falls-Hyak. This section needs a lot of work.
