Ridden Trail:
Every few months

Summary:
I am writing this review about 4 months since I have last ridden this trail so I don't remember all of the details. I have ridden this trail a lot in the past but hadn't for about 5 years. I went up a few months ago and the route up there looked completely different. The trail itself was intact and fun but it took a couple of attempts to find the old upper enterance. It is still one of my most favorite trails and worth the climb (see route into below). The trail is somewhat technical if you go fast and it is wet.

Recommended Route:
You used to be able to drive up the logging road, stay to your right and park in the wooded cul-de-sac. the upper trailhead enterance (the best direction to ride the trail was just beyond the locked gate). There has been A LOT of logigng going on this this area over the past 4 or 5 years. It looked nothing like it did before. Now you cant drive to that cul-de-sac because there is a locked gate at the enterance of 6-pack road. To get there now you have to ride up a steep logging road. If I remember correctly, you stay to your right. Going uphill you will first pass the "exit" for the trail with a small wooden sign marking the trail. I didn't see this on the way up and the sign is tucked in the woods so is only visible when you are heading downhill. Anyway, pedal and sweat until you reach the old cul-de-sac (no longer wooded), go past the locked gate on the forest road to your right and enter the first trail you come to on the right. Stay right when riding the trail. It isn't very long but is mostly downhill. If you have time, ride up and do it again!

Summary:
I only rode this trail because I was staying in the PA area at some friends. Great setting. The drive seems like your going up, up ,up right into Olympics or an alpine valley in Switzerland. The DNR logging was still going on as of the end of November 2003. Glad the timber sale is going to make $900,000 for the County. I hope the State puts in the contract that the logging company must repair the damaged trails. Approx 30 to 40% of the northern portion of the trial is now unrideable. (Picture stumps, snags and brush piled 6 feet high where the trail used to be.) It is a fairly short trail and with the clear cutting even shorter.
Summary: This is an okay trail if you live on or are visiting the top-o-the Olympic Peninsula a but it is by no measure a destination ride.

Recommended Route:
Same as previous posts. Don't think that the part that is closed for logging is full of cool logs to ride over or that you can huck your way over all the debris on the closed part of the the trail like I did. Unless your driving a D-9, it really, really is unrideable.

Summary:
Turn south off of W. 8th Street onto Pine St. or exit from 101 onto Pine St. just west of Albertsons. South of 101 Pine turns into Black diamond. Go to the top of Black Diamond and turn LEFT (south)onto Lake Dawn Road. Follow it to the first steep left turn which "sixpack" and go up it for about .5 mile to where the trail hits the road on the right. Park on the left in the off-camber little pull off.
The loop is being LOGGED. THERE IS NO UPPER PARKING LOT!

Recommended Route:
The climb is tough and technical. Shuttle weenies forget it. The first possible left is DNR Closed. The second left will take you on a good little 3? mile loop if you take the next two rights. IF you go straight at the second right of the loop you can follow the trail to a killer double tract desent down to Mt. Angeles Rd. Caution! If you go down it you have to go back up it to get to your car! The downhill back to the car will command your full attention! Overall this trail is still a good short fix for competent XC riders. Difficulty depends on how hard you push the limits. I'll try to keep the logging distruction posted but realize that much of the original Foothills trail is already toast and it will get worse before it gets better.

Trail was in good condition, banked turns, very little loose rock, roots, or ruts. Approach via fire road is long and steep, you've got to earn it before you can spend it. Makes a great loop ride. Heart pounding climbing and breathtaking downhill.
