Mt. Peak
2 reviews
 3 of 5

The front of Mt. Peak is mainly used by hikers which are frequented by the town cops and fire fighters trying to keep in shape. Number one, be curtious to everyone and give the hikers the right of way here. The front cannot be ridden up unless you have some un-earthy powers. It's approximately 1 1/3 miles long with many exposed stumps and rocks, with sharp cut backs. You will have to pack your bike up to the top then ride down. You may want to consider taking off your seat and seat post for the ride down. Down grades as steep as 30 degrees, maybe more. EXPERT ONLY. The back side is a different story. Hardly ever being used makes for a nice and enjoyable ride up. Ride up is what you will be doing. Approximately 1 1/2 miles up with exposed rocks and loose gravel make for a short but hard ride to the top. There are several trails to venture off too if you do not want to pursue the summit. Coming down is worth the trip up too. Intermidiate to advanced.

Trail Directions
There are two different main trails both leading to other trails on the mountain. It's a small mountain so it's increadibly hard to get lost. Front Side Hikers Trail: Drive through Enumclaw like your continueing out of town toward Crystal Mountain on highway 410. At the McDonalds in town take a Right on Watson St. Continue to the stop sign and turn Left on Warner. Go about a 1/4 mile and take a right on 276th Ave. S.E. Continue for a good mile and you will see the mountain right in front of you. Apon literally driving up too the foot of the mountain, you can park anywhere on the side of the road. BACK SIDE: Continue on highway 410 like going to Crystal Mountain. Take a right at the light onto 284th Ave. SE. Continue for about two miles. Take a left onto SE. Mud Mountain Rd. and continue for a little while. Look for SE 481st St. This is the trail head. Park on the side of the road.

Summary:
As previously described, the best route to take up is around the back side of this little mountain. I'm a local Enumclaw rider and I just discovered this little workout session. If you don't have a bunch of time, and need a hard workout with some good fun thrown in, this steep little mountain is for you. I really don't recommend descending down the front because there is just no clean way to do it without ripping up the trail. Remember, leave no trace. The trail is for hikers and bikers will quickly get banned if they make their presence known. The front side is extremely steep and difficult in places. Only an expert rider would be able to successfully descend on that trail without hurting themselves or someone else. This is a very busy mountain with many visitors each day. The back side is relatively open with a few single track trails to play on after the main climb. Be cautious and courteous of the hikers at all times. They own the right of way so treat them accordingly and be nice.

Recommended Route:
Back side only - and stay there. Please don't think it would be fun to bomb down the front side. There are too many hikers to be safe about it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mud Mountain Dam - It's name fits though.

Summary:
This is a pretty sweet ride. It is REALLY short, so I wouldn't travel far to ride it unless you are planning on riding something else in the area like Palisades or something. Anyway, It is really steep, narrow, with tree roots, rocks, and water wear eroding the soil. It's pretty technical, and the switchbacks are pretty sharp. I know a couple people who went off the trail into the bushes cause they missed the switchback. I actually had to stop and put my feet down a couple times to make some switchbacks, but if you're a decent rider you might not need to. It was a blast though. Watch out for people. Since it's such a short ride and there are a lot of hikers I gave it a lower rating. Other than that it's pretty fun.

Recommended Route:
Ride up the gravel road on the back side, then ride down the front side.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Victor Falls, Crystal Mountain. I haven't ridden palisades yet, hopefully I'll try that this summer.
