Kennewick State Patrol - Zintel Canyon Dam

You start out dropping on to Big Tire for a short 10-15 minute ride to the top and then wind your way through the sage and pick a downhill trail from 8 or 9 different trails, ride across the bottom and back up to come down another trail - we generally consider a moderate ride 2 ups and 2 downs in an hour, clocking 7-8 miles. If your looking for technical then Slick rock is thrail for you. It's on the opposite side of the canyon and is quite a climb and drop off. Bring water and tools the ride site is about 3-5 miles from town. Trail maps are available at trailhead. Another good practice bring a snakebite kit, we ocassionally see a rattler or two crossing the trail or hiding just off of them. These trails are available virtually year round and are even more fun for night riding - See you out there real soon. I've actually heard people say our trails are comparable to or better than Moab, UT.
The site is essentially tucked into the corner of Hwy 395 & Interstate 82. Coming from south, east or west take I-82 to exit 113 to Hwy 395 north, take next right (Law Lane - State Patrol office is at the top of the hill)Park at the dead end. From the north take Hwy 395 south through Kennewick turn left just past 36th Ave (on left after last major traffic lighted intersection is 27th) onto Law Lane park @ deadend. Enjoy your ride!
Summary: The main hill-side has lots of smooth, s-turn stuff. I found a sweet, big ring, gradual descent with some really fun jumps. Not crazy drops, but the speed available makes them very lively. A little exploring around the dam will find some really tight, and nasty (rocky), ascents/descents. I was there in April, the word is that it gets pretty dusty out there in the summer. I rode for about an hour and half, non-stop, and didn't get over the same trail too much, and mostly saw xc style trails. The sage brush there is pretty amazing to see. I didn't expect this desert area to be so scenic. If you are in the area, this is a must ride. It is probably important to emphisize that for best results try and get here from October to May. The locals say that summer on this trail set is significantly less fun. This is a beginner to expert trail set.
Recommended Route: Take a couple of hours and explore.

Summary: This is no Moab and does not compare to Northern cal.(Redding, Shasta Lake, Whiskey Town) For this area, you will not find better riding. It looks flat when driving by, but has some nice rolling climbs and some fast downhills. Perfect for beginners or someone wanting to get in a good quick workout. When you are done, drive to Hermiston for food at Obie's. all the bikers hang there. Chance is Obie will be there and he is the local pro.
Recommended Route: same

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: We were headed on a 6 hr road trip for a day of riding. As we were leaving Kennewick on the HWY, the rig broke down. Crazy enough there were 2 guys on bikes in the feild next to the HWY. Thats how we found it. No trees, a few basketball sized rocks. Pretty cool. Dont bother in the summer unless you live there-very sandy. If you live up north, its not a bad drive for some dirt when the snow starts to fly. As good as Moab, not quite and Moab is not that great either.
Recommended Route: Go ride. Not hard but fun in the winter when there is snow everywhere else. There is nothing challenging here but the trails roll fast and fun keeping it livly. The 'slick rock' trail that locals think is super hard, is not. Hard to tell that there are slight up and downs there since from the highway, it looks flat - like any desert.
Other recommended trails in the same area: I doubt there are any other trails in the area except Finley, and the tallest treeless Mtn in the U.S.
