Rock Garden @ Westview Park

Average Rating:    (3.4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 5

A backyard technical work out for Harrisonburg locals. Lots of Appalacian rock formation that require precise front tire placement. Good drop off jumps. The trail covers a 3/4 mile square where the trails create a maze effect.

Summary:
First of all, it is Westover Park, not Westview. Take 33 west out of town, the park is across from the New Holland Farm Equipment store. Turn into the park, go uphill (right) to the last picnic pavilion uphill. Park there and look where the cleared ground behind the pavilion meets the woods. There will be an opening in the fence for one trail entrance. There is also a big trail entrance at the far right behind the pavilion. You will enter through one of these and exit through another if you vary your return route. It is good practice for working on bike control in rocky trail spots. Great if you don't have too much time and want to stay in town.

Recommended Route:
Start in either direction, be prepared to hop/climb logs along with some good sized rocks. Try to pick a good line through each section and not dab. When you get through the woods to the school property, turn around and head back but take different forks, they will all eventually come back to the park. Only about an hour's worth of riding but it is fun.

Summary:
Neat little trail, LOTS of rocks, nice drops. Good for a little after work workout. Watch the low branches when you flying on these trails! Nice place to try out your bike after repairs, before you hit the big rides up here. It is close to everything.

Recommended Route:
Just go to the top of the hill and follow the fence until you find a trail, pick one and go on it

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Check these out!! LOTS of them up here, stop by a cycle shop and ask. Reddish knob, and all the rides around Todd lake

Summary:
one of the best things about the rock garden are the little rocky outcroppings all over the place. if you're new to mountain biking and living in harrisonburg, this place is AWESOME for developing the technical skills needed to be comfortable on the big mountain loops out on shenandoah mountain to the west. you can ride it on an urban assualt through campus and make a good afternoon out of it.

Recommended Route:
put a blindfold on and ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
anything on shenandoah mountain or massanutten. stop by the shenandoah bicycle company on main st. and they'll hook you up.

Summary:
Good if you don't feel like going far. Maybe 3/4 mile from the JMU campus, very convenient. Go spend an hour or two and hone your skills. Several small drop offs. Tire placement is the toughest thing here. Try to go from one end of the "Garden" to the other without putting a foot down - a fun little challenge. RECOMMENDED FOR: ANYONE

Recommended Route:
A big maze of routes. Just keep turning and you can spend hours in this 3/4 mile square.
