Poor Mountain Traverse

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

Climb poor mountain road. Starts with 3 miles of pave and turns to dirt past last house. Climbs an impressive 2000+ feet up poor mountain till it tees into Honeysuckle road. Turn right and continue climbing till you get to the top of the ridge. The total climb is approx. 9 miles. Ride ridge past towers for 3 - 4 miles (blurry fast). You will come to a 4-way intersection in the middle of nowhere. Drop jeep road to the right, ignoring hand written signs about gate at bottom. This road is a right of way and will eventually turn into Brake Road and take you to your vehicle in Elliston. This downhill is approx. 6 miles and wicked scary fast. Not a very technical ride but covers a big mountain in less than 3 hours.

Kick butt jeep trail ride with loads of elevation and easy logistics. I rode this ride today in under 3 hours and covered a big mountain right outside of town.

Recommended Route:
Climb poor mountain road (route 612 from route 11 in Salem). Continue across ridge to 4-way intersection. Drop fire road on right. I recommend shuttling the 10 mile section of Route 11 between Elliston and Salem.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ft. Lewis mountain, Potts Mountain

I did this ride today Aug 29, 2010. The 4-way intersection is not so obvious since the main road is in great shape right now and the cross roads show zero traffic.

The Brake Road descent drops through someones backyard. My maps show the easement as an old highway. The landowner at the bottom of the switchbacks treats the road as his own - I moved through there quickly and saw no one. I'm curious if you can confirm that the road easement is still active. I won't do this again until I can confirm that the easement is valid - I was a bit nervous riding through that section. If you have details on the easement I'd appreciate your contacting me.

The ride is great. At one point Honeysuckle bends hard right and there is a gate in front that leads to a summit. The part past the gate to the summit has one incredibly steep stretch where old concrete with ridges was laid in each track.

I don't think the ride on pavement is bad. I rode from Brake Road down to River Road and took that back to Poor Mountain. It is easy after all the climbing.
