Cross Country Rider Summary: Sweet trail's within 5 minutes (by bike) from downtown Roanoke. Great for a quick after work or pleasure ride. Good aerobic workout with a fair amount of climbing. Trails are not very technical but there are a few rough spots (rocks & junk). Very well maintained, but not to the point of taking all of the fun out of it. It's sometimes hard to beleive you were just in town a few minutes before. We are very blessed to have this park. Recommended Route: I change it up most of the time to keep the ride interesting. For a quick ride from downtown I will ride up Walnut Ave., turn right on Sylvan (old road to the top), get on Big Sunny (junk car trail to some) @ the 3rd switchback, left @ fork onto Riser at the top cross the road to Monuement (best trail on the mountain) back down to Sylvan Dr. Other recommended trails in the same area: There are a ton of places to ride in the area some faves are Carvins Cove (of course), Fort Lewis Mountain, Dragonsback (will kill you if not in top shape)& Spec Mines to name a few.
