Explore Park Subaru Trails
26 reviews
4.08 of 5
The Explore Park/Subaru Trails contain hilly, mountainous terrain with off-camber straightaways, whoops, plenty of climbs and fast drops. There aren't too many protruding roots, yet (May 1999). The climbs, coupled with wet conditions, can make this a challenging ride. The trails are under forest canopy for a shady ride, and there is a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife.
Take 220 South from Roanoke to the Blue Ridge Parkway, take the Parkway East for about 7 miles and the Explore Park is on the South side of the Parkway. The is a small, $3.00 per day, fee for riding the trails, and if you don't bring your own bike, bikes can be rented at the park entrance.
Summary: I finally got to ride this trail system and it is a excellent trail system. I have ridden the 1996 olympic trail system and some other great trail systems but this one is now my favorite. It has everything for anyone from beginner to advanced. There is a great trail to introduce people to the sport. There are good inclines but the downhills are fast and fun. The trails were in great shape even after all the rain we have had here. This trail is maintained by volunteers and they are doing an excellent job. I only hope the trails will remain open after Roanoke decides what will be done with the land.
Recommended Route: Warm up on beginner then follow signs to intermediate. I rode the outer loop on this day.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Carvins Cove
Mill Mountain

Summary: I haven't been out much yet. I just started a couple of weeks ago, but really liked this trail system. They're easy to follow and clearly marked with White, Yellow, and Red paint on occasion to mark the relative difficulty. There's a beginner's loop, about 1 mile, which has a few light climbs, and a few somewhat lengthy downhill rides - nothing technical. It served as a great warmup to get ready for the intermediate trail, about 7.25 miles, which has some really fun sections - some tricky (at least I thought so) downhill sections, and a few climbs that seemed near impossible. For those who want more of a challenge, there are two expert loops along the intermediate trail, marked with red. According to my buddies, these were difficult, but not ridiculously so. For now, I would say these are some fun trails to get someone into biking, and even think they could be an enjoyable ride for a more experienced rider.
Recommended Route: I liked using the beginner loop for a warm-up. Then follow the intermediate trail.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Can't recommend much - only been here and Carvin's Cove. Loved them both, but the Cove whooped me - it was my first time out!

Summary: Just thought I'd update the previous post. These trails are still open for at least the next few months. The trails are great with a good mix of up & down, speed & technical. The trails are well marked but stay covered in leaves most of the time. When its rained its slick.
Recommended Route: Intermediate trail. Just keep following the signs until you want to go home.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Carvins Cove.

Summary: This is a great local trail system. It is where i got my start in mtn biking 4 years ago. Also the RCO has held a Thurs. night ride here over the winter months.I have rode here up to 4 to 5 times a week over the past 4 years. It really sucks that as of November 15 2007 Explore Park will be closing its gates. No one knows what will happen with the trails. Please come out on the 15th at 6pm.It could be the last ride there.
Recommended Route: Anyone that is accessible after closing.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Any trail that is open to mtn bikers.
Summary: This trail is in awesome shape. It seems to be a lot more burned in compared to when I last rode it. Some of the newer trail sections are a little too tight so the flow is not as good as it could be but it is still a lot of fun.
This trail really worth it if you're in the area.
Recommended Route: Ride the beginner loop for a warm up (plus it is a lot of fun) and then head out onto the more advanced trails.
