This trail was built and is maintained by the Eastern Virginia Mountainbike Association (www.evma.org). It's new and doesn't have a lot of traffic yet, so it's still soft. The first 1/2 mile is winding and lumpy, with a couple of technical climbs, making it difficult to maintain momentum, but good for building bike handling skills. The next 2 miles aren't as technically challenging, but there's plenty to keep you entertained and on your toes. At times the trail is close to the property line and you may notice "No Trespassing" signs. Stay on the trail and keep the signs on your left. Some people have become confused by the signs and got themselves turned around. A little way past the second bridge the trail forks. If you've had enough, take the right trail for a half mile ride back to the trailhead. If you're ready for more, take the left trail for 2 more miles of singletrack. A little way into the second loop you will once again notice "No Trespassing" signs. As before, follow the trail and keep the signs on your left. Be prepared for a good dose of climbing, but the reward is a couple of nice downhills. The last half mile of this loop was laid out with the help of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, and it is sweet. The trail ends at a logging road. Turn left and go about 100 ft to where the first loop crosses the road. Turn left onto the single track to exit at the trailhead, or continue on the logging road, which will also leads back to the parking lot. Beware of pungees on the logging road. This trail system is still under construction and needs additional grooming. It isn't as long as York River or Waller Mill (yet), but will give you more of a workout than either one. The EVMA's ultimate goal is to have 25 miles of single track at this park.
From I-64 take exit 234 to Route 199. From Route 199 take the Longhill Road exit. Turn right onto Longhill Road. Stay on Longhill Road, which takes you into the park entrance. The trailhead is directly behind where the road ends. There is a Y intersection at the trail head. Bear to the left. The trail you see to the right is the end of the loop.
Summary: Fun trail, well designed and planned out. I ride this trail a few times a year when I visit my in-laws. Just discovered the new trail on the other side halfway through my stay in VA and wish I had time to ride some more. Though not very technical it is very fun with the teeter totter, skinnies, log ride and jumps. Good stuff and very well done by the local mtb group.
Recommended Route: all of it then repeat.

Summary: I live in $mond & the jrps loop, forest hill, powhite, pocahontas are all in my backyard. I ride these everyday. I thought there was nothing that would come close to what richmond offers till i took a stroll @ freedom park. The flow is consistant & busy. First loop not technical but rolls beautiful. The use of the topography was genius..not an inch wasted. After i smiled ear to ear I found myself @ a marker directing me to the other loop. This section is where everything you could ever want begins. Rolling ups & downs , climbs, jumps, logs, teeters, whoops, moguls..everything to test almost every aspect for all types of riders! This has been the best park iv'e ridden so far!
Recommended Route: Ride all the loops @ freedom!
Other recommended trails in the same area: York river park/ marl ravine
New Quarter park
Nike Carrolton park (sweet 2 mile)

Summary: This trail has changed drastically since the last review. It is now home to 7 miles of continuous fast-paced XC trail. And another several mile long trail for All Mountain/Free Riders.
Recommended Route: for the tougher all mountain style track, go backwards from the parking lot, over the tiny bridge past the round ranch-style fence and into the opening into the forest. the trail on the left and right are part of the loop, go either way, you'll know soon enough if you went the wrong way (jumps are backwards, good luck on that one!)
Other recommended trails in the same area: none, this is getting better than new quarter in my opinion. We are going to add more tougher stuff and some BIG AIR jumps

Summary: Last Saturday I had a chance to ride at Freedom Park. WHOA!!!! What a great place. I'm from the Pittsburgh area and work here 4-5 months a year. I contacted Kirk for information about mtb rentals. He immediatly invited me to ride with him,Penny, & other members of EVMA. He was gracious enough to let me borrow one of his bikes. I ride in a small local park that's nothing like Freedom Park. I thought the trail was well designed and maintained. There's plenty for any level of rider. I'm an intermidiate rider and i had plenty to keep me happy and on my guard at the same time. The climbs were not very long or to difficult, but you do get a good work out. The decents can be taken at a variety of speeds to keep a smile on your face. (or not if you loose control). I would recommend this park to any one of any level.
I enjoyed it so much, i joined EVMA that day. I haven't been to any of the other parks yet, but i believe since they are maintained by EVMA, they will be as good or better.
I think EVMA has a great slice of mtb heaven.
thank you Kirk for your hospitality.
