Mostly single track. Some pavement to complete the loop.
Rt. 28 towards Manassas, Rt on Braddock after movie theater, left at first light, go .5 miles to Mount Olive Babtist Church and park there. Head East along the powerlines. Read Scott Adams' "Washington-Baltimore Montain Bike Book" for more info.
Summary: Yeah this "trail" was the first one I rode after moving to VA last year. I also saw it in that MTBing in Northern Virginia book. After trying to figure my way around this loop and ending up in countless thorn bush dead ends and backyards I thought "Oh man, NOVA is gonna SUCK for mountain biking". Well then I got smart and went to some real trails (FH, Wakefield, etc) and am much happier now. I won't ride this "trail" again. It's a complete waste of time.

Summary: I read about this trail in "Mountain Biking Virginia". In the book it describes a nice trail, though not in a wooded area. There is a picture showing a nice well defined trail underneath power lines. This book was first published in 1995, and I can only guess that this description of the trail was written back then as well as the picture being taken then. There really isn't much of a trail. It looks like there used to be a trail, but it is all covered by thick grass. It makes it almost impossible to spot trail imperfections and holes, which makes this a very unfreindly trail to ride. I think there is some potential here if there was some type of trail maintenance, but theres not, and I don't think there ever will be. So I would say avoid this one unless you happen to be extrememly bored or just can't get to any other trail.
Recommended Route: Stay in your car and drive somewhere else like Fountainhead or Michael Farraday.

Summary: In the strictest sense, this isn't a MTB trail. This is more a locals after work ride. However, there's some good sides to this trail as well. If you want to enjoy it trace out the route in Google earth before you ride. There's no "trail" per se, you're on your own to make it through, and it's easy to get dropped into a deadend.
What this ride lacks in user friendliness or beauty it makes up in technical offerings. It's got a little of everything, open grass, pavement, steep climbs, sliprock, and stream crossings. The ATV damage also adds to some technical challenges, as massive ruts on some of the downhills would be very unforgiving to mistakes in balance.
Note, there's a golf course blocking this ride with a big black fence cutting you off at the 2 mile marker making the total loop right around 4 miles rather than 8. The fence is at Union Mill Road (38°48'3.41"N, 77°25'25.29"W).
Recommended Route: Park at Centreville Elementary School, coming out of the parking lot take a left on Green Trails Blvd, a Rt on Rock Canyon Dr, a right on Chestnut Run, and a right on Compton Village Dr. This is a half mile roll through neighborhoods, and there's a faster way to get there by climbing a fence if you want to figure it out. Actual riding starts at about 38°49'1.66"N, 77°26'33.64"W.
Other recommended trails in the same area: If you're not within 15 minutes of this ride don't bother, head over to fountainhead.

Summary: First of all the person who "thought" that this trail was for bikes, is an idiot. This trail is clearly for ATV'S and TRUCKS. This trail is absolutely horrible. The weeds were LITERALLY up to my waist while riding my bike. There is no clear cut path. The worst thing is it leads you STRAIGHT into the heart of Route 66. However recomended this trail is a moron, and should have his biking priveleges revoked immediately.
Recommended Route: Dont listen to the guy that says, "park at the church" or the other guy who says, "park at the school" because they are both retarted AND THERE IS NO TRAIL SO DONT WAIST YOUR TIME!!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Fountain Head is a beast and a true test, check it out.

Summary: I grew up in centreville, and use to ride this trail all the time. I didn't know it was a mountain bike trail. But I had a mountain bike and had some good fun. A great decent was just off of compton road. You hit the stream pretty fast, and I wrecked a few times (didn't have suspension at the time) I haven't been back to that spot in 6 years. But, i would hope it is still the same, but probably full of homes now. Have fun on this trail. Most is easy, but right there is a tough climb and fun decent. My rating is primarily from youthful memories.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Well, I think it is called "back compton" I think there are houses on the trail now. But it was fun when I was 15, a lot of mud.
