Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Weekend Warrior Summary: Well designed trail with good maintenance. The trail is little used by bikes although may be a mine field due to horse traffic. Just rooty enough to make if fun. Most slopes have only light erosion but a few problem areas need attention. Even though I had to do the walk of shame with a flat, it was still worth the trip. All in all, a sweet strech of fast singletrack. I will definitely be back.

Cross Country Rider Summary: I see this as one of the most under rated trails in the Tidewater region. It is a fairly easy ride and a great place for beginners to cut their teeth and experience some fun and fast single track. I would agree that there are not log piles or skinnies to liven up the ride for the advanced folks, but it does have 20.5 miles of twisting single track over undulating terrain. The multi use trail is an out and back but with the addition of Loop 1 - 7 on the return trip, you almost feel like you are riding a real loop (this is my only negative - I hate out and backs). As the trail name suggests, it is a multi use trail and you need to keep and eye out for horses and hikers. The trail last weekend was in excellent condition and has been well maintained. Recommended Route: Its hard to get lost here since all of the trails are marked well, but you can find a map for this park at http://www.gpstrailsource.com/Maps.aspx?MapID=31
Other recommended trails in the same area: Wahrani - intermediate to advanced
New Quarter - killer intermediate single track with a free ride area
Freedom Park - Another example of outstanding trail work by EVMA
Lake Maury - another great location for beginners

Weekend Warrior Summary: This trail is located in Gloucester, VA off of 17. Going North, once you pass the Walmart in Gloucester turn right at the second light and then left before the school. Follow the road all the way down and the trail is just on your right before you enter the parking lot (South Entrance). For the North entrance, keep going on 17 until you see the Fire Watch tower near the Shell station. Turn right and drive until you see the sign on your right. I highly recommend this trail to anyone looking for a good ride. This trail isn't extremely technical, but is still challenging. The trail is single track, but not so narrow that you might hit your shoulders on trees. The trail has plenty of ups and downs, bridges and tight curves to keep you on your toes. For you more advanced riders try to see how fast you can make it from trail head to trail head. The total length of the trail is 9.5 miles one way. This trail is not a loop so you either have to do an out and back, or follow a friend up there and stage a car at each end. The only downside to this trail is it is a multi-use trail, not exclusive to mountain bikes. Be careful for the horse droppings on the trail in places. Other than that its a great trail and I highly recommend it to everyone. Recommended Route: Trail head to trail head. Other recommended trails in the same area: Marl Ravine, York River State Park and Hardwood Mills, Newport News.

Weekend Warrior Summary: I have been using Beaver Dam once per week for conditioning rides for several months now. The trail layout is fun and offers good distance as an out and back run from the main entrance. Enough hills and turns to keep in interesting and make for some vigorous short climbs if you're really pushing it.
Use of the trail by horses has increased dramatically in recent months. I saw two horses one miserable cold day when I expected to see no one and 14horses on a nice day two weeks ago. The trail is getting absolutely shredded in sections. I don't mind mud in the ravine bottoms but the horse tracks are chewing up the high ground and hill sides as well. I'm about to give up on it.

Cross Country Rider Summary: What a great conditioning / training ride! Very aerobic workout from the start. I've only ridden from the Main entrance, and gotten about 9 miles into the trail. Lots of mud in the low spots, and some at unexpected places. Isabel has changed the terrain. Most of the up-hills have roots, and valleys have mud - don't get too cocky. The horses have trashed the low spots, but for a multi-use trail this is still a great time.
