Berry Farm

Trails are Double track forest roads on a piece of public land owned by augusta county. There are many trails that are underused and overgrown due to the fact that most of the public is unaware of this piece of public land. The tract of land is 520 acres and has a huge potential for more trail in the future if the county would catch on the the potential. The problem here is that eight months out of the year the county leases this PUBLIC land to a farmer to cut hay on the front portion of the land, and does not alow the PUBLIC to acess PUBLIC land. Also in the fall they allow hunters to use the land for a few months that leaves the gates open to cyclist only a few weeks out of the year. I plan to find out when the lease is renewed and attend what I hope is a public hearing for the lease of public land. So I am posting this to let other cyclist know that there are great trails very close to Stauton(around fourish miles out of town). So that they can try to use the land when it is open. I have ridden the existing forest roads and they are fun with a couple of steep short clims and some fun descents. ALso every time I have been on the property I see at least twenty deer. I have seen a fox, and many groundhogs. The front portion of the land is pasture, but the rear 3/4 of the land is planted pines and forest. It has a huge potentail for being a great spot for Hiking and Mountain Biking.

Trail Directions
Leave Staunton on Springhill road near Gyspy Hill Park. You will go out and cross 275 after leaving the city limits. Shortly after crossing 275 Springhill will split and Berry Farm road is straight ahead. Take it straight onto Berry Farm and ride maybe another half a mile or so and Berry Farm property is on the left. There is a sign on the left that says something about hunter parking at a pull-off and then about a hundred yards further on the left is the entrance which is usually gated. IT IS TRESSPASSING IF THE GATE IS CLOSED. which is completely wrong since the land is public land. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO CALL THE AUGUSTA COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT TO INQUIRE WHY THE GATE IS CLOSED!!!!!! They're phone number is 540 245 5727

Summary:
This area is closed off to bikes Nov 1st till January for hunting season. It is accessible to cyclist during non-hunting season, by stopping by the local staunton bike shop, Black Dog Bikes, and signing a county waiver. The county may in the future begin to build singletrack trails here with the local cycling club, Queen City Cycling Club, Info can be found online at http://stauntoncycling.proboards50.com/index.cgi Please do not poach this area and ride during the hunting season. We may be able to have new sweet singletrack here as soon as spring by keeping the local authorities happy, and if funding is provided for the trail work.
