Ipswitch

Ipswitch can be hard to get around without someone who knows a good "loop", there are as many loops as riders there. It is an excellent ride to hone those singletrack skills, or as we like to call it, to gain the "ipswitch advantage". Trail is a flat, sandy, extremely tight singletrack, if you think its to easy, you are not riding fast enough! Ive seen a lot of injuries and broken bike parts there from slamming into trees. Basically, the trail is broken down into a front and a back half, each about 2 miles in lenght, best bet is to spend a few hours riding around to orient yourself to the maze. Find a rider that looks like they know the trail and follow em'! Watch out for the BMX kids, they have set up a series of jumps, doubles, etc there on the fire-road like sections that connect the singletrack, dont get in there way and they wont get in yours, take a rest and watch em' catch some air. Night riding there is a blast, agaom. watch those trees! And lasty, be carefull, watch yourself as a "bad" element has occasionally been known to hang out in the woods there. Have fun!
From I-64, take the Indian River Road West exit. Once on Indian River Road, make a left onto Level Green Blvd (Level Green is a loop and has 2 entrances off Indian River, take either) this is right by a gas station. Drive down Level Green for about 1 mile and make a left onto Drew Drive. Take Drew about .5 miles and cross a "T" intersection. Trailhead is on your right about .25 miles, right before you see the "Ipswitch" sign, it is the name of a condo community. Local bike shop is HDK cycles, (757) 424-6151.
Summary: Took a while to find, BETTER directions to main trailhead (there are multiple secondary) is take Indian River Road exit west off I64. Go about .3 miles to Level Green Blvd @ Texaco Station. Follow .9 miles to Drew Drive (left turn) for .6 miles, trail head is marked with park sign immediately after crossing Chesapeake / Va Beach city line on the right.
Trail is a crazy network of single track through wooded area with a little double track. Would recommend a casual pace first time through to figure out the layout. There are BMX jumps everywhere, some pretty extreme, some major drop offs too if you didn't know where they were. About 4-5 teeters, and a few assorted obstacles scattered throughout. Lots of fun once you get your bearings and can pick up the pace. Some of the single track gets pretty narrow and is a little overgrown off the beaten path. There is a sort of central area for the BMX stuff. It had rained and some of the low laying areas were a little wet and jumps ended up in small 6 inch ponds.
The park is divided by power lines and continues on the North Side of the clearing -- this where the other main entrance is (off Rokeby Ave). More trails along the same lines.
There is a bunch of junk scattered around throughout -- looks like kids (BMXers) don't follow the "leave only your footprints (tread marks)" motto.
Overall fun ride once you know where you are. Not sure how crowded it gets with the kids around riding. Have fun! Shared trail with runners also.

Summary: I visited this trail for the first time the other day. It was after a long rainy spell, so there was a lot of standing water. The trail was still somewhat fun to ride on regardless. On one side of the trails you have a descent route to take for beginners or if you just want to check out the BMX racers. On the other side you have a few more technical areas for you to try your skills on. I was really sad to see all the garbage everywhere though. From shopping carts left in the ravines to coke cans and bottles left around by people. Another thing that's somewhat frustrating, and that I don't really care too much for, is the trail layout. It took me 30 minutes to figure out where I needed to go in order to find my way back to the vehicle. There really isn't any set paths which eventually takes away from the fun of riding and makes you concentrate on the direction you are going. Overall, I think that I would go back since it is so close and it allows for some descent practice.
Recommended Route: Stay to the right going all the way through for your firs time. You can get a sense of the perimeter. Once you can understand this layout, then try going for the other interconnecting trails.

Summary: This is a great trail for the area. I've been riding ipswitch for a few months now and I still see something new every time. It does lack drops, or advanced obstacles. Which is why my friends and I just built a pretty large drop and teeter. It's definitely not for the inexperienced, you have to be able to ride burms steep climbs drops and teeters in order to conquer my creation. Check it out on my myspace myspace.com/navyguy0403
Recommended Route: My friends and I start off at the man made obstacles just before the main entrance. Then we work our way toward the bmx jumps, where we spend some time tooling around. Then just continue clockwise around the whole park.
Other recommended trails in the same area: York River State Park is the only other trail I've been to in VA, and it's great.

Summary: From the point of view a hardtail dirt jumper this trail is excellent from beginners to advanced riders. In the begginer section there is a small jump followed by medium table top very easy for any beginning dirt jumper. These jumps are new because the old begginner lines got bulldozed by the city but if you case em and take out some dirt try to fix it there is usually a shovel just laying around. there is a digger line called 264 with good flow and smooth trannies but i wouldnt recomend going after a rai nto try and jump because the trannies are filed with mud and water. The last time i was there new building on the boneyard (set of jumps parallel to 264) has almost been completed and it looks amazing, im talking professional grade jumps so smooth and squared off at the top very impressed. Other wise the park has fairly nice singletrack with the odd obstacle you might find such as a see saw or whatever. Nice to place to go if you live in hampton roads that has few good trails and your looking for a more agressive trail.
Recommended Route: if you want to get to the jumps quick coming down military take your first right after providence then after that take another right onto miller i belive and that ends in a court with the entrance at the end.

Summary: Trails were easily visible though not marked. For being a park that is now city owned it is still very fun to ride. I don't get on my bike enough and having this trail system so close to home is makes me do it and I'm glad. I wouldn't travel hours to ride there simply because it isn't really all that big but if I were in the area (its 25mins from the beach) its worth checking out. As far as shady people, go I have never experienced any trouble. Yes it is located between to neighborhoods with a lot of teens but that how it all started was with the kids riding their bikes thru the woods. I am going to be out there alot more and hope to see you'll out there.
Recommended Route: Different every time
Other recommended trails in the same area: still exploring myself
