Gap Mountain

The Gap Mountain Trails are really interconnected with riding the Brush Mountain Trails. They're all on the South/Eastward face of the mountain, and are all great. These are all very challenging, and although they do not offer the same vertical rise as brush mountain, they offer more technical riding which when combined with a long climb and downhill on Brush, gives you the perfect mountain biking workout.
From blacksburg, take 460 west just like you're going to Brush Mountain/Pandapas Pond. Travel a couple miles outside of town, pass Pandapas Pond on your left and then as you come to the top of the following mountain (Gap Mountain), you'll take a left onto a fireroad at the very crest of the hill. There will be a sign about Giles County in the middle of the highway just after this turn. Turn, and go 2-5 miles, there's many different trails, for a complete map, go to East Coasters and use the same map as for Brush Mountain.
Summary: Fun, a little rocky and technical, but never outrageaous or extreme. If you climb trillium and stay left, its a challenging technical hill. If you come from royal and climb prickly pear, the initial climb is rigerous but short and dropping trillium is very sweet.
Recommended Route: Start at the regular pandapas pond parking and cut over to gap on grand royal trail (1st trail on right after less than a mile on poverty creek). -or- park at Krogers and take glade rd. to shadowlake rd. then climb old farm trail. Drop sidewinder or the beast then dowm poverty creek till you cross the gravel road. Now begin climbing gap on a trail called Trillium. Keep taking lefts until you have to drop back down to the gravel. Grand royal hits the gravel up the hill on the right after about 1 mile.
Other recommended trails in the same area: mack's mountain, carvins cove, dragonsback
