Freedom Park

This trail was built and is maintained by the Eastern Virginia Mountainbike Association (www.evma.org). It's new and doesn't have a lot of traffic yet, so it's still soft. The first 1/2 mile is winding and lumpy, with a couple of technical climbs, making it difficult to maintain momentum, but good for building bike handling skills. The next 2 miles aren't as technically challenging, but there's plenty to keep you entertained and on your toes. At times the trail is close to the property line and you may notice "No Trespassing" signs. Stay on the trail and keep the signs on your left. Some people have become confused by the signs and got themselves turned around. A little way past the second bridge the trail forks. If you've had enough, take the right trail for a half mile ride back to the trailhead. If you're ready for more, take the left trail for 2 more miles of singletrack. A little way into the second loop you will once again notice "No Trespassing" signs. As before, follow the trail and keep the signs on your left. Be prepared for a good dose of climbing, but the reward is a couple of nice downhills. The last half mile of this loop was laid out with the help of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, and it is sweet. The trail ends at a logging road. Turn left and go about 100 ft to where the first loop crosses the road. Turn left onto the single track to exit at the trailhead, or continue on the logging road, which will also leads back to the parking lot. Beware of pungees on the logging road. This trail system is still under construction and needs additional grooming. It isn't as long as York River or Waller Mill (yet), but will give you more of a workout than either one. The EVMA's ultimate goal is to have 25 miles of single track at this park.

Summary:
I enjoy Freedom Park very much! I have only been riding about 4 months and would say that I am at an intermediate level; I can totally hang with this trail. The first couple miles are a great workout if you push it, and you are definitely rewarded later on. The last few miles are just for fun stunts (which I watch my boyfriend do) and lots of little hills which I love. It is definitely more technical than New Quarter, but I have ridden more difficult trails in North Carolina. It is a great workout and great fun :)

Recommended Route:
keep left; vroom vroom!

New Quarter Park

Summary:
I absolutely LOVE this trail! The local club absolutely got it right with this place. They haven't dumbed-down the trail which means LOTS of stuff for me to play with throughout the trail. It flows better than just about any trail in the Williamsburg/Richmond area. Even though it's just about as much fun as you can find, it can also be just as good a workout, if you want it - just turn up the RPM's and believe me, you'll feel more than a little burn! And now they've been allowed to add some Technical Features?!?!! YEAH! Several 3 to 5 foot drops, a couple of table tops, and teeter totter, and don't forget the numerous downhill sections. You'll be smiling ear to ear!

Recommended Route:
Get on your bike and just ride it! It's a one-way trail, so you don't have to worry about how fast you go, just do it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
York River State Park, New Quarter Park

Summary:
Great trail, very well maintained. I got my first concussion here. Very technical NOT for the early beginner(me). Ridden a few more times, still not used to its difficulty. I'm sticking to New Quarter for now till i get a little better at judging trail flow.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
New Quarter, York River

Summary:
First and foremost someone needs to get a moderator to delete the name "District Park Trail" as no one has referred to Freedom Park by that name in the local mountain biking world in a very long time. In fact here on empty beer is the only place I have ever seen it called that and I have rode it since it first opened. Now onto my review. This is my personal favorite trail in SE Virginia including everything east of Richmond. Like most trails in this region there is not a ton of elevation change, but rather short yet punishing lil' lungbusters that will keep you on yr toes. The original sections of the trail have been honed to near razor's edge excellence regarding flow, use of topography, and technical features to please even the most jaded expert level riders. Recently an additional 3.5 mile section was added during the first couple months of this year that take the aforementioned trail apogees and add even more technical features including well designed bridge drop offs, rollers, ridge line single track and a brief switchback climb. The man-made stunts are well placed, unobtrusive, have ride arounds and are not completely dumbed down. Previously, I felt there was a real void when Waller Mill, the crown jewel of local trails, was lost a few years back despite the newer trails (including this one) that were being opened at the time. Freedom Park with its new trail and continued refinement has finally eclipsed Waller Mill in pure fun factor. Those who rode Waller's know that this is saying a lot. Hats off to EVMA for bringing this trail together and their fantastic efforts to maintain its modern appeal. I have rode all over the US and Freedom Park is up there with any sub 20 miler metropolitan area trail I have been on. Check it out. The aerobic and the technical difficulty go up another notch when the trail is wet. Overall I would give it a 4.5 rating, but I will go with 5 over a 4 since I had such a blast there today.

Recommended Route:
The main trail head is right at the corner of the parking and is marked. The trail is designed to run clockwise so bear to the left. I won't try to explain how to get to the new section, but just ask someone who is there. Signs are coming soon enough.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
New Quarter, York River State Park, Wahrani, Gatewood, Ipswitch and everything up in Richmond.

Summary:
This trail continues to improve thanks to the EVMA and many hours of volunteer labor. Reroutes on the original trail keep it in good shape. The first third of this trail makes great use of the naturally occuring ravines for short steep climbs and corresponding downhills. The middle third is a little less aggressive but still fun. There are two options to this part of the trail. The intersection is not hard to spot.Choose for yourself which is better. The last third can be short circuited by a new trail that was completed in late February. This trail adds 3.5 miles and contains two ladder style jump platforms a skinnie and 1 dirt mound drop. Also incorporated in the trail are multiple moguls. Overall trail distance is approx 9 miles.
Freedom is probably the closest aerobically challenging trail if you live on the Southside of Tidewater. Well worth the trip.

Recommended Route:
Map is posted at trail head.

Gatewood,York River State Park,Harwood's Mill,New Quarter,Upper County, Warhani.
