Summary:
Rod ethe West River Trail from my house in S. Londonderry, today 7-5-04 after a pretty heavy downpour. We entered from the old train Depot off rt100 and followed along the river on an old railbed about 2 miles into Windhall Campground. Follow thru campgroung and over bridge and past a yellow gated double track of shurpack for another 2 miles along the West river. After that the trail becomes singletrack rolling thru thru the woods along the ridge line climbimg up to the Ball Mountain Dam area. Really cool water hole, gotta stop for a swim. you exut the trial onto asphalt road that leads you to the splillway and ontao a dirt road over the dam and down some wicked scary switch backs along the backside of the dam, down some 100-200 feet to the river level, nice downhill and over a wooden bridge into Jamaica State Park, 2 miles and your out onto RT 30 again, either stop for a coffee at the Jamaica Java Hut and head back or go on via the road. Next trip I will follow West River Trail to end and loop back. Great trail not to hard, no armour required. better done dry than wet, lotsa roots, I hate wet roots.

Summary:
I think the trail you describe is the West River Trail, which is a rail-trail project in progress, to eventually go 32 miles from Brattleboro to Londonderry. The section you rode is thru the Ball Mtn Reservoir area and Winhall Campground and is all on land owned by the Corps of Engineers. The trail can be picked up again south of Jamaica State park, but you have to ride Rt. 30 for a couple miles to the junction with Rt 100 and find old Rt 30 off to the right and then duck behind a yellow gate and down into a the backwaters region of the next Corps' area to the south, Townshend Reservoir. Once you make it down to Townshend dam, the trail pretty much ends, at least officially, because we're still working on securing easements from landowners in Newfane and Dummerston.
About 2 miles of trail are open on the southern end, accessible from the dirt road leading rorth from the Marina Resteraunt along the river. For more info you can call me at 802-257-4547, ext 113 or check out the map on the Windham Regional Commission website at www.rpc.windham.vt.us
