Berlin Pond fire roads

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 6

Rutted fire roads, packed dirt, gravel, some mud. Lots of options. Generally bear left for a killer steep climb to the radio towers and a fast DH back down (about 8mi round trip). Some quickies to the right for singletrack and other distractions.

Summary:
"Gruling" Is a 30min (depending on fitness level) singletrack run that I enjoy very much on Irish Hill. It is VERY technical at the top to keep newbies off. It then climbs and decends several times for about a mile then decends for two more miles over some great rolling terrain. It is one of my favorit's along with my two dogs, summit & sequioa.

Recommended Route:
The MAMBA trails are on the right off the atv trail just before the bridge. But the best trail, "Gruling",is a secret 30 min singletrack trail located at the top of the atv road. Stay sraight on the atv road, you will pass an atv road that turns left but continue straight. Once at the top, you will see a fire pit on your left and the begining of "Gruling" (refering to the climb!). Follow it to the top for some great expert singletrack. The trail dumps you out half way down the atv trail you just climbed.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The trails across from norwitch university are pretty cool, great for extrteme downhill, 20' & 30' huck's. some 45 degree pitches.

Summary:
This is a really great climb to the fire tower. I have tried to explore some other trails but one time came to a no trespass sign and another time followed a trail that dumped me out on a very unhappy landowners' back yard. All in all a great place to ride, but if you go off the main trail be prepared to double back, or better yet, bring a friend who is familiar with the area. I've heard the montpelier group MAMBA helps to maintain these trails and often leads rides in the area. They are @ http://www.bikemamba.org/

Recommended Route:
Stick to the main trail to the fire tower.

Summary:
It's hard to describe, but if you poke around you will find some very nice singletrack up on the east side of Irish Hill, below the radio towers and above Berlin Pond Road. Some of it is too scary for me, but it's worth exploring for intermediates and up.

Recommended Route:
Climb the main jeep trail up the ridge of Irish Hill. Bear left about halfway up for some nice single track, or drop down from the top near the radio towers.

Fun. Go there.

Recommended Route:
Took a while to find the trailhead. Measured with car later: almost a mile. Go past the real road on your right, then look for a pretty substantial log road on your right.
