Killington

Mucho Trails. People inthe NE used to rave about Mt. Snow, but Killington has gotte their act together and in the last 2-3 years has created a bunch of great singletrack trails. They maintaint them superbly, too. Stuff for all levels and abilities (maybe not beginners). (I am talking XC - the downhill is suppesed to be great too) I am the last person to hype a big moutain corporation's stuff, but in the name of fun I figered I had to post this network of trails.

Summary:
Lots of good runs with some new trails put in this year. Top 1/3 is loose gravel work road then the options start. Go left and hit the expert runs, go right and hit a mixed bag of runs. Not really any beginner terrain, seeing as its a mountain, but thats fine with me. The new steep runs are pretty damm good, steep and technical, some are fast and flowy, but one is total gnar. There are also a bunch of great cross country trails below the lift, only problem is the climb back to the lift, so they are always empty which is cool.

Recommended Route:
downhillers route is 1 to 4 to 30, and then next run try 1 to 3 to 32. Try 7 on the other side to 21, now no more climbing up to get the north side trails

Summary:
I had high hopes for Killington. After the fast and fun Catamount trails and the near perfect Kingdom trails, Vermont was looking to be a mountain biker’s heaven.

It was a beautiful drive to the mountain on a perfect day. I got to the mountain and saw only 2 other mountain bikers in the parking lot of about 15 cars. After paying $32 for a full day lift ticket I got on the gondola and had a scenic ride to the top. The lift operator at the top confirmed that I was only the third mountain biker there that day. The rest were hikers and people just riding the gondola. They had to have lost thousands being open for only a handful of people. Then I started down. The top 2/3rds of the mountain is all loose gravel roads. In my opinion, not the best mountain biking. Then I got on the #6 trail which was technical single track. Some parts were difficult but not too bad, but very few parts were the slightest bit fun. It was just technical. I love technical but this was like work. The trail wasn’t planned out well and was in desperate need of maintenance. Plus, the constant braking wreaked havoc on my knuckles. I'm afraid to see how much brake pads I have left. And the whole 20 minutes down I never broke a sweat. The rest of the day I explored the mountain in search of some descent trails. Thankfully I found that the trails below the lodge were tolerable but still not up to VT standards. I also found a couple of closed trails that the guy in the shop never told me were closed.

Killington is so huge. I was surprised that they didn't open up more of the mountains to biking. Only one mountain was open with mostly loose gravel roads. It’s like opening the mountain to biking was an afterthought. They could have a 20 mile trail that snaked across the mountains down to the base lodge if they wanted to. They only have one trail that is away from the ski slopes. The rest of the trails near the ski slopes were not woodsy at all. It reminded me of when I rode through the coal strippings in PA. Kingdom trails has 20 times more single track that is a thousand times more fun and in much better shape for less money.

I think this experience has turned me off of ski resort biking forever.

Bottom line: Complete waste of money. Head up to Catamount or Kingdom trails if you want to have fun.

Oh and the "Adventure Center" is a joke. One small waterslide, a pathetic rock wall, and what looked like a kindergardener's skate park isn't worth the extra $8. Thank God I didn't go for that!

Recommended Route:
Save your money and stay off the top of the mountain if you want descent single track.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Catamount - Fast and fun.
Kingdom trails - Near perfect extremely fun single track.

Summary:
Absolutely loved it here! Don't think that just because it's all downhill you won't have to work, though. (I actually made my husband climb the 1800 feet w/o the gondola before we could do any downhilling.) My fave was #13. It was tight and twisty with some great drop offs. And the scenery is phenominal.

other good routes: 1-2-7(CAREFUL, SICK $h1T!!!!)-11(awesome single track!!!).
KBL loop is a good warm-up
Only advanced to expert riders should ride 7, and 11 has a long climb before you get to the trail.
if you plan on going fast, recommend knee/shin gaurds and elbow/forearm gaurds and chest protecter. Full finger gloves are a must, helmets required, have at least a suspension fork, if you go all rigid, good luck

Recommended Route:
my fav for speed is 1-26-1-25. Its a def for anyone who wants to hit 35+mph. (dad clocked it on cycleometer thing)

Summary:
I have only ridden the side over toward Bear Mtn, so can't comment on the other half. Did three trips to the top and down the day I was there, starting from a condo at Sunrise Village. The ride to the top is a long, sustained climb but you risk getting clobbered by all the fat, technically inept people who rode the gondola up and are riding down the fireroad because its the easiest way down. You can ride trail 6 (singletrack) half way up, but then you have to ride the second half up trail 1. Downhill, you have to start on trail 1, but can then cut over to 3, back to 1, to 6, down to 18. 6 and 18 are decent singletrack, but parts of them have been overly groomed so you are riding on a dirt path rather than singletrack. I guess this was necessary to make them rideable in muddy conditions. I don't think its worth riding all the way to the top unless you're doing hill training. Just ride to the top of 6. The place is okay, but I wouldn't choose it as a singletrack destination. There are lots of places that are more challenging, have much longer singletrack sections, and are free. (Well, I didn't buy a lift ticket so it was free for me.) If you want to do some sustained climbing in preparation for a trip to Colorado or somewhere similar this is a decent place for that.

Recommended Route:
I started at bottom of Bear Mtn, road over to 18, up to 28, then up 1 to the top. Down: 1 to 3 to 6 to 18 then back to one for another trip up.
