One tough knarly climb to one of Moabs best views ever. You end up above Fisher Towers on the other end of Castle Valley looking across to Porcipine Rim. It''s 2-track jeep trail, but don''t let that fool you. It''s one tough climb thru slickrock, rock shelves, slickrock steps, and not many people ... yet..About 4.2 miles up, if you start from the intersect of the Kokopelli trail. A 2000++ altitude climb from there to the top. At the top you are treated to one killer view...down to Onion Creek Rd. below. The ride down is hairball to say the least..as hard as you want to make it. Go really fast and test your susp. to the nth..but keep you eyes peeled as the rock gremlins will try to steal your front tire. For a jeep trail - tough - and I still give it 5 flaming stinkys...

Summary:
Context is everything. I rode this trail on the Saturday of President's weekend. Translation? Mid-February. It's been a long, fat winter. And this trail was perfect for jump starting the season. Perfect. Why? because it is a 100% rideable, brutal, semi-technical uphill with an amazing payoff at the top. Coming into Moab from the Cisco 'short cut' off I-70 (i.e. Highway 128) the trail starts 31 miles from Moab; and it's on the way into Moab! Nice diversion. There is an old bridge (National Historic Site) called Dewey Bridge where you first hit the Colorado River. Well signed. The Kokopeli trailhead starts here. Literally right at the foot of the old bridge is a dirt road leading to the trailhead 5 1/2 miles away. The trail is Porcupine's twin, seperated at birth by the abyss between them. But there is a clear resemblence in the trail surface. It's like Porcupine without the crowds, only a bit steeper. Great fat burner. We rode it with a bit of snow/mud on the trail--which added a grunt factor that set our legs on fire. But in a good way. Best view in the whole Moab area (And that's saying something!)

Recommended Route:
Only one choice: straight up. Some ATV/Jeep spurs try to take you left; just stay right.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Porcupine Rim, Sovereign Trail, Slickrock.

Summary:
From Moab take hwy128 east along the Colorado River past Castle Valley. The 25 miles from town along the Colorado is worth it alone. At the Dewey Bridge hang a right into the parking area before you cross the bridge. There is a toilet available here. Mount up and ride! Don’t be a Sissy! Its 5 miles and about 1500’ of vert on a jeep road to warm you up until you hang a right on to the Kokopelli trail. Then it’s just a short 5 miles and 2000 vert to the “Top of The World”. The views are killer! And the best part, there will be no goobers here. They’ll all be riding tire to tire on the “Porcupine Rim”. You can watch them ride by from a crossed the valley. Eat your lunch top and loose it on the way down. It’s a bomber all the way down! For you 1x1 riders I rode my rigid 29er using a 33x18 and was comf’y. Could have use a 17 for a bigger grunt……

Recommended Route:
See above, route finding is EZ....

Summary:
All I have to say is holy crap. As a trail, it is a 6 or 7 mile climb straight up (from the Kokopelli Trailhead) then a bomber of a descent back to where you just came from. No aesthetically pleasing singletrack here. However, as an experience, it is amazing. You climb and climb and climb, and just when you are starting to think the trail can't get any steeper or longer, it does. As you ascend, you'll be able to slowly notice how much higher you are, and how much higher up the hill you are - and how much nicer the view is. But don't space out, because once you reach the top (very little warning) you will simply end at a cliff. To fully comprehend this view, you have to ride this trail. It truly is a 360 degree panorama. If you love Porcupine Rim for the view, then you must ride this trail. You'll be suffering badly when you get there, but once you see what there is to see at the top, you won't even remember how much the climb hurt. I can't do it justice. Soak in the view for a long time, then saddle up and bomb back down. I would definitely recommend bringing more spare tubes than you might expect, because this is one rough desert trail. The only problem is that it is like 30 miles out of Moab.

Recommended Route:
Up, rest, down. repeat till dead.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
All of the classic moab trails.
