Jackson's hole loop

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

Turn West off main street Moab onto Kane creek road and go to the Amassa Back parking lot; this is the start.
Start up the fire road in the same direction you were traveling and pass the Amassa Back trailhead on you're right in a half mile, continue climbing the mostly easy grade until the 9.5 mile mark at Hurrah pass at close to 5000 ft. ignore all turns. Next is a steep 2.5 mile loose fireroad descent to the billboard for a private ranch at 12 miles. Turn right down a dry (usually) wash (be sure to secure the gate after passing through it). Follow the wash until the signage leads you off onto a 2 track, after 4.2 miles of combined trail and wash you have the option of going left or right around the rock tower (i went right)2 miles later turn right onto the short fireroad leading to the cliff at 18.2 miles and start the hard part of the ride; the portage from hell.
Mountain bike Utah says it's a 500ft elevation gain but I think it's more, most of it with you're bike on you're back climbing waist high rocks. From the bottom it looks like theres no trail but the start (on the right as you look up) has a few gray paint slashes and a cairn or two at which point the "trail" becomes more and more evident, and steep follow the gas pipe up from about the 1/4 mark to the 3/4 mark then as the pipe heads up to the right you go left.
At the top of the portage there are 2 options I know of, first is a right down Amassa Back with a little climbing and some wide but still technical descending to a point on the road 1/2 mile above where you started for a 22.3 mile loop. Second is Jackson's trail, for this continue in the direction of the gas line you followed up the cliff until you find the faint (at first) singletrack that becomes very exposed and technical in places which puts you back on the road you came in on below where you parked for a similar length ride with a very different ending.

Summary:
A great adventure/touring type ride that covers a lot of ground. Route finding isn't super easy but I managed with the one page print out from utahmountainbiking.com and a simple bike computer.
I do weekly 20+ mile rides with a shorter ride or two most weeks but this kicked my behind, I was strugling by the portage and ran low on water and out of food.
The technical rating is for the portage and the finish trail. The aerobic rating is for the overall length, portage and the loose trail surfaces. Don't even think of trying tis ride in the heat of summer.

Recommended Route:
As written.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Porcupine, Soverign, Amassa Back, Slickrock and Jacksons.
