Monitor and Merrimac Trail

The trail begins on wide, grated dirt road, passes through a few sandy washes, and ends up on the slick rock sides of amazing towers. The trail winds around 2 towers then meets back up with the road. For photos of the area, go to http://moab-utah.com/photo/ironclads.html

Summary:
A good ride to take the wife on, as long as she is willing to ride through a decent uphill, and then through a bunch of sand heading back. The slickrock sections made it worth it! A very fun slickrock downhill section with a couple of short steps to drop off. A lot of areas to just play around on. Pretty good views, and overall a fun, fairly easy ride.

Recommended Route:
I went clockwise, which gave a the great slickrock decent.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Slickrock, Amasa Back

Summary:
From the trailhead off Hwy 191 it's an uphill to the M & M, a figure eight around 'em, and back downhill. It has been a LONG time since riding it (June 1994) but besides the twin tower vistas it is eternally memorable for swarms of biting deer flies! I was riding solo (foolish) with frequent stops to navigate and those demoniac insects would immediately beset me, every time. Annoying and painful! Up on the slickrock sections the flies were fewer and the riding more fun...in all, not a bad little Moab primer for newbies provided you don't mind driving to the trailhead.

And the flies ain't hungry.

Summary:
Umm...well this trail offers some cool scenery, but overall I thought it just sucked. First off, it seemed like half of the time we were riding through sand, you ever tried riding a bike through sand? It doesn't happen too easily. There are some dinosaur fossils or whatnot on a little hiking spur, however we are either stupid or they are just a waste of time, I wouldn't bother with it personally unless you really know what you are looking for. The only good thing I saw about this trail was it did have some cool scenery and it also leads to Bartlett Wash which is a fun area to bike around, other than that I wouldn't recommend this trail.

Recommended Route:
Umm...just go to Bartlett.

Summary:
easy slickrock, good warmup ride for the rest of Moab. Did this all counterclockwise. Hit the valley behind the 2 and lots of sand. Some rideable and some not. Gave a 3 for at times the sand sucked to ride through. One of the few rides in Moab where a hardtail is fun to ride.

Summary:
I didn't even bother doing this entire trail, as the sand was a gigantic annoyance, and the trail itself otherwise just wasn't that fun. There was a pretty cool downhill on ALL slickrock as you round the first butte (clockwise) and come to the the first intersection. the first climb was actually kind of annoying, as it was all just a steady slickroack climb. when i rode it, it happened to be very windy. it was pretty scenic, but there are more scenic, more enjoyable, more challenging trails in Moab. Of course, this was my second ride of the day, so i was low on energy. that may have made it a bit more difficult for me, but still. i won't be doing it again.

Recommended Route:
a good trail guide will tell you exactly where to go.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
proc rim, top fo the world, amasa back, portal
