sweet single track for all levels of riding. first half is an uphill ride totaling about 600 vertical feet. then you can add upper moo for more fun or start the decent. the last half of trail is fast and tight.
drive west on 40 10.5 miles from vernal. park at the entrance for the gravel pit. dont block the raod. hop on bike. go through the gate be sure to close it. trail starts a little ways in on the left through the wash.
Trail Length
11.5 miles for lower, 20 miles for upper and lower
Summary: This trail was ok, but it has been washed out by a large rain storm. It is barely rideable. SKIP THIS TRAIL. Vernal has many great trails, this is not one of them, Do Cork Screw or Jazz if you want fast and flowy, or Rojo or More Hoes if you want technical.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Rojo, Cork Screw, Flume, Race Track, Jazz, Slippery When Wet, Retail Sale,

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: A rare gem located in a place that is not interstate friendly. Interstate highways tend to attract throngs of poseurs, wannabes and lamers who can't (or don't care to) control their bicycles. This place is still pure and raw, shown by the narrow and hardpacked strips of goodness veining through the desert. If you like narrow singletrack, riding really fast under your own power on climbs and descents, no throngs of undesirables, and a most excellent place for singlespeeding, Vernal is for you. Go see Troy at Altitude Cycles in their ultracool new shop location (a native american hogan type building that used to be an "indian trading post") and support the folks who support and promote great mountain biking in all of Northeastern Utah. This past Winter has seen a change in Lower Moo that has deleted the doubletrack and has added about a mile or two of killer twisty goodness. It's all very singlespeedable on a 2:1 ratio and flows extremely well. There are also a few changes in the lower descent that add a few new twists, turns, ledges and slickrock patches. The bottom line? If you like riding uncrowded desert SINGLEtrack in Utah that wants to stay narrow, Vernal is it.
Recommended Route: What the Northeastern Utah Fat Tire Guidebook by Rich Etchberger suggests.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Anything listed in the Northeastern Utah Fat Tire Guidebook by Rich Etchberger.

Summary: If you want the botom line on riding here, read no further. My buddy and I got bored with Moab and Fruita so we thought we'd give Vernal a whirl. The guy at Altitude Cycle was a star. Showed us the best Vernal had to offer and how to get there. That said, here's the story. 1st of all, if you come here when it is dry and hot,you will be disappointed. Many of the trails are loose and sandy and require some moisture to be good. Luckily, we got into town 2 days after 3 straight days of rain. The trails are pure in terms of narrow single track, but many of them are in unremarkable places. There is no, repeat no shade. If you can get into the mindset of just riding for riding the trail itself you can have some fun here. just don't look for stunning panoramas cuz it probably won't happen unless you free ride the slickrock swells just north of town. twist fast on Can You Moo and have fun
Recommended Route: As described
Other recommended trails in the same area: Retail Sale, Slickrock north of Vernal

Summary: This trail was good. I mean really good. I have been and seen quite a few trails; Fruita before it was "popular" (and before Pollock bench was shut down), Moab (Porc., Amasa back, Pritchett, Gemini, etc. etc.) Uintah rides, AF, PG, Cascade, Logan, Various So. California rides, Etc. The thing that makes me really laugh are all the riders who try to look balls-out on this forum by spewing out hack. C'mon guys, where is the soul? Where is your soul? This city was great. Altitude cycles is one of only a handful of shops in all my jaunts that treated me like a human being. Ever get that bike shop BS from you local gig? It isn't worth it! No one deserves to be treated like a moron! I have boycotted shops in my home town/across the state for their eletist atitudes. I'll say it to every MTB-er out there--cut the crap! Put your soul into something we all truly love and ride! Get back to the grass roots that made you love the sport. As to the arguments presented on this review--"mostly flat" and "unexciting" are words which probably describe YOUR riding abilities! My father in law and I rode Can you Moo/Upper Moo last Saturday, then went over to Retail Sale and rode there too! 30 miles of butt kicking riding made that way by hammering it out on these technical, tight n' twisty trails(which are maintained by a little uniqueness--more of which we need in this cookie-cutter-mock-your-mother-and-everything-else attitude found in our sport). My father in law, an avid mountain climber, ascends peaks all over the americas, north and south, and has taken to biking with the same veracity at age 46! These trails are as hard as you make them. Come out and ride with us, eat some of our trail dust and some humble pie, and then write a review that truly represents the trail and not just your riding abilities. Then we will see how much hack and attitude you sling around. The 24 hrs of Moab is three weeks away. I guarantee I for one will be for damn sure ready to ride some great laptimes because of one thing--SOUL. Let's try and find some shall we?
Recommended Route: See Troy or Pattrick at Altitude cycles
