Stucki Springs

This trail is best done as an add-on to the Green Valley Loop, adding about 10 miles. Nice single track, with great downhills and some good cardio workouts. Rejoins Green Valley Loop at Clavicle Hill.
This is an add-on to the Green Valley Loop so follow directions to that trailhead, proceed along Green Valley Loop, descend the Three Fingers of Death, proceed about 200 meters, then take an unmarked, little-used cutoff to the right, proceed 1-2 miles to the trailhead for Stucki Springs.
Summary: My family had picked Utah for the family vacation this year and we had access to a condo from my sister-in-laws time share so we ended up in all places??? St George. And right outside my front door was the trailhead for this and other good trails. I ended up riding Hurricane Rim and Gooseberry before this as I didn't even know about Bear Claw Poppy/Stucki Spring. I was stuck one day at the condo, so I went to Red Rock Cyclery and they gave me a map of the local trails.I couldn't believe my luck. I went ahead and rode immediately. It was pushing 100 degrees, but the hot weather doesn't bother me and I found this trail to be super fun. I first rode out to the end and then doubled back and did Stucki.Am I glad I decided not to just head back. It was getting late though and I wasn't sure how long it was going to take. I managed to do the whole trail with Stucki in just over a couple of hours and it is what I call a great xc ride. I got a kick out of the names (three fingers of death) and a couple other good names. I rode everything I could find on these trails and I will be back. Might not be the caliber of Gooseberry or Hurricane Rim,but definately fun. Big props to the locals too.I really had a fun time with Josh and I don't remember the other guys name, but you guys were great for showing me around.

Summary: First off, I’ve gotta defend my home turf: Hey, Colorado wuss, ease up! Sorry you didn’t have a good time, next time give me a call I’ll show you how this trail is more than “a few hours to kill” and is actually one of the best rides in St. George. Second, if it weren’t for the motorheads, we wouldn’t have this trail (not to mention Slick Rock). So, putting a moratorium on them would be biting the hand that feeds us. My brothers and I think it’s great not many people are aware of the trail, mostly for fear for your safety. Be advised, if you see 800LBS of chrome headin your way, the laws of physics say: step aside!
OK, this is one of the best rides in S. UT. I’ll have my chrome bro explain the loop we take in full detail. I will concede, this trail is not for scenery enjoyment and you may not want to be caught out there in mid-July. The trail is actually best just after a rain storm as it hardens up the sand and dirt. We take a different route, which takes us up the race course (very intense warm up, level 4 at least); down “trash hill” (technical level of 5+), then out to the middle of nowhere and back via Green Valley Loop. I believe that the trail markers are not labeled Stuck Springs, but rather “Bear Claw Poppy Trail.” If you follow those, you’ll stay on the trail. Taking the trail this way is not for the faint of heart, you actually have to earn. . .
(switch to high gear) YEEEEEE-HAAAAA, lace ‘em cowboy, its time to earn y’er keep! Best whooptie-woo’s you’ll find. They keep comin one right after another and you’re screamin for the next ½ hour or so. Then you connect to Green Valley Loop, enjoy another 10-20 mins of roller coasters, and head back to the car.
Ride hard and say hello to the chromedomes if you are lucky enough to see ‘em.
Recommended Route: Depends on skill level. I like to earn my keep, so we take the hard(er) route to start it off.

Summary: Awesome trail, endless quantities of whoopties, high speed downhilling and ball-hair-raising descents. Lots of fun. I don't know why this trail doesn't get the hype it deserves.
The lion's paw has three descents on it, look before you leap. They increase in difficulty from left to right.
My wife did this loop as well and loved it.
Recommended Route: My favorite way to do this trail is to start at the bottom of the Bear Claw Poppy, climb that to clavicle hill, continue to the Gorge overlook and Stucki Springs, climb up to the Downhill race course, descend that, then go down the Lions Paw and Bear Claw poppy back to the car. This is doing the loop clockwise. About 20 or so miles.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Gooseberry, Little creek, and the JEM trail are pretty good too.

Summary: if you're stuck in St George with 2-4 hours to kill, give this a shot. It's not real special and would suck if over 80 Degrees, as there is no shade. This whole area is just a another chunk of the great boggielands and would have some more coolness to it except that it has been devestated by jeeps and ATVs. There does seem to be some effort to build more single track and perhaps someday it will be better. First, Lake George and the BLM need to close this whole zone to the motorheads and then pray for a vast flood. There are much better rides than this nearby.
Recommended Route: As described above
Other recommended trails in the same area: Slickrock swamp, Gooseberry mesa, Little Creek Mesa

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: About 200 meters past the base of Clavicle hill stay to your right as you come off the three fingers of death (I think that's what it's called...it's all well marked and signed now, I just can't remember the name of that last drop before the sign)you'll see a sign for Stucki Springs marking a well used trail veering off to the right (Green Valley veers left). A fast rolling short descent then a long steady up and down climb to the edge of the bluff. The trail follows along the ridge up and down for two or three miles then makes one final steep climb up to a fence. The trail goes either left or right here; I don't know where it goes to the left. (Can anyone enlighten me. Is it worth exploring?)For Stucki Springs trail turn right. Here's where the fun really begins. The trail becomes a fast up and down roller coaster descent with a smooth hard packed surface that will put a huge smile on your face for the next two or three miles (months?). We met some riders just before reaching the edge of the bluff, who were heading back towards the green valley loop counterclockwise because of an approaching storm front (it was just starting to sprinkle and temp was dropping)I'm sure glad we decided to press on as I would not have wanted to miss that roller coaster sprint(Hey, what's a little cold weather when you're from Ely and it's 20 deg, and there's a foot of snow everywhere, and you haven't ridden in a month?). At the end of the roller coaster you come to a T with an ATV trail, turn right here and follow it towards the steep short uphill double track you can see in the distance. Short but extremely steep hike-a-bike(perhaps 200 meters) up to the top of the bluff. My legs were were so rubbery from the long ride after my extended layoff, I didn't think I was going to make it up. At the top we turned right and rode up another 50 meters to the next ridge, crossed the double track and entered the single track down-hill that takes you back to the trail head at the end of Canyon View Drive. This last part of the trail has been used for the down hill at the senior games and I think is the return half of the Cross Country race loop. Steep, and a little rough in places with several sharp turns and slick rock drops. It's the perfect end to an incredible ride. Fun, Fun, Fun!
Recommended Route: We rode it clockwise starting at the base of Clavicle hill after doing Green valley out and back.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Gooseberry Mesa, Green Valley
