Skyline (Ben Lomond Loop)
12 reviews
 4.33 of 5

Combines three shorter rides which are actually respectable endeavors in themselves - South Skyline, North Skyline and Ben Lomond - total of about 30 miles of singletrack, 10 miles on road back to the parking area. Here's what many won't like: 6000 vertical feet of climbing. Tough-nuts only. If you want to pose go take a lift ride at Deer Valley. Attractions: huge views, long rolling ridges, a REAL test of one's endurance. South Skyline begins as a climb to the ridge (follow great western trail markers) and takes the rider along the ridge to a moderately technical descent to North Ogden Pass. At North Ogden Pass cross the road and begin the North Skyline trail. Start climbing again till you reach the ridge and ride it to the base of Ben Lomond peak. You now bear right and ride down a trail slightly more primitive than what you've been on but it is downhill all the way for a long way. Very rocky towards the bottom. You are spat out onto the parking area for what I think is called North Fork Park (?). It's pavement from here on out. Ride to Eden and from there back to your car or truck. Go to Ruby River and have a big fat porterhouse steak. You deserve it.

Trail Directions
Take I-15 north from Salt Lake City, take the exit in Ogden for Ogden Canyon/recreation areas. Drive up the canyon to Pinehurst reservoir, make a left at the dam as if going towards Powder Mountain. About a mile farther there's a parking lot on the right. Look for the trailhead across and down the road a little bit. Carsonite post and great western trail markers. Start climbing.

Summary:
Hope you like to climb! Each of these trails offers some of the longest, best sustained climbs you will ever see. The Southern Skyline trail, starting from the Pineview Reservior trailhead is relatively smooth. A great place to take your hardtail and crank up your aerobic capacity. Halfway up, there is the most amazing view of Mt Ogden. Go in June when the trail is lush, but the mountain snowcapped, for a class A photo op. The Northern Skyline trail runs about the same relentless grade, but is rockier and you will feel it more. Ben Lomond trail is the toughest yet, and best saved for the downhill unless you are a serious hammerhead.

Ridden Trail:
Ridden Once

Summary:
I did the North Ogden Pass to Ben Lomond segment. Don't let anyone fool you, the trail is a tough lug. This segment starts with two or three miles of switchbacks and then a few miles along the backside (east side) of the ridge until you get to the base (base, mind you) of Ben Lomond peak. Get there and then you decide if you want to do it.

The best thing about this trail are the endless views. Go on a nice, clear day and enjoy.

Wasatch Crest, Pipeline, Mueller, and the Double Secret Trail.

Summary:
Lots of climbing, descent is kind of harrowing as the trail switches back along the mountain with a sheer drop on one side. Multi use trail so plan on dodging hikers and horses (don't forget to watch for horse shit). The upper part of the trail is by far the best and is 4 star.

Just to let you know the name of the dam you will cross is PineVIEW dam not Pinehurst. Sorry, Tom.
