Red Mountain Trail in Vernal
4 reviews
 4 of 5

One of the little known treats of Uintah county. If you like to climb you will, for the first 5 miles you climb about 1200 feet, the last 7 miles is killer downhill, whether you do an up and down or do the loop. The trail starts out on a little sand, progresses to bedonite (slippery when wet) to some slickrock patches, baby-heads, staircases, lunar terrain, red dirt, fire roads and yellow pine. Great views at the top. Maps are available at Altitude Cycle, 510 East Main, Vernal, 435-781-2595---GET ONE! This ride is a local favorite, not for those who are Barcolounger compromised :-)

Ridden Once

Summary:
I only rode this trail twice, but it is very challenging. You'll do some carrying up the steps unless you've mastered 1-2 foot steps, but getting to the top is worth it. Two choices, either ride back down the steps or drop off the side of the mountain down that little sheep trail. I wanted to ride down the steps, but couldn't ever pass up the little sheep trail. It's steep, very steep, and with a couple of tight switchbacks on it. You have to get your weight off the seat, and over the back tire, a must for this section. The last stretch down the road is a blast. It is a dirt and paved road, not a trail, but still a blast...great top speeds!

Recommended Route:
Up the sand and step section, down the steep drop, then finish on the long downhill on the road

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Asphalt Ridge--the guide from Altitude Cycles is good overall, but the map for this trail wasn't. I got lost without any effort. I recommend going with someone who has ridden this trail before or taking a compass.

Summary:
This is a great MTB trail if you are looking for a short and wild (or grueling if you go up) technical ride. Much like the trails around Moab, with lots of slickrock and staircase ledges. The only drawback is that the trail is relatively short as compared to other rides in Utah. The really fun part near the top of the mountain seems like it is only 2-3 miles long, and the rest (another 2-3 miles) is basically sand/dirt jeep trail.

Summary:
GET THE MAP! (see above) A climber and a downhiller's delight.

Recommended Route:
Can be done as an up and down, or a loop in either direction.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Asphalt ridge (an extensive trail system), Buckskin Hills, Ashley Forest to the north. Maps for these Trail maps are available at Altitude Cycle, 510 East Main, Vernal, 435-781-2595
